The great purge had a political purpose and leaders abusing their power to eliminate opposition happened pretty much everywhere in history, most likely happening even today in some african countries.
    It's easy really:

Fascism: A party regime where discrimination against certain race, ideal, religion or physical appearances is the pillar. Anyone against the ideas of the party is purged accused of treason.

Communism: A party regime that makes people equally poor while the government controls most of the national assets and riches. Anyone against the ideas of the party is purged accused of treason.

Donald Trump's ideas go to the fascism ideology. Fascism ideology or extreme right always grow in a country that doesn't desire the difficulties of dealing with its world neighbors. Trump's way of thinking isn't far off of something that millions of people from EU or US are thinking right now.

The extreme right's supporters are rising in number the more refugees and terrorism grows, which is one of ISIS tactics. ISIS wants more supporters in their holy war by increasing the discrimination and rejection from western countries.
