I don't get it. Who are they going to unite with? There was no alliance during the first war.

It's like the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Things don't always go the same way as they do in classic canon. An alliance will be attempted, and, seeing as we mostly see humans fighting, fail miserably inside the conference room. There's a megathread for the movie for any further questions.
