Women's soccer players file Complaint Against U.S. Soccer, Seek Equal Pay

Women's soccer players in the US make less pay even though women's soccer makes a lot more money than men's soccer. The women decided to take it to court.

Five prominent members of the U.S. Women’s National Team have filed a wage discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging that governing body U.S. Soccer has illegally and unfairly paid women’s players less than their counterparts on the USMNT, despite the women’s team being more successful and, at the moment, more profitable.

The complaint, which was filed by Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Alex Morgan, alleges that,

“There are no legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons for this gross disparity of wages, nor can it be explained away by any bona fide seniority, merit or incentive system or any factor other than sex.”

According to the complaint, USWNT players currently take home four times less than their male counterparts. Here’s how that manifests in bonuses, appearance fees, even per diems:

This is not so simple a matter as the men being paid more because they earn more for U.S. Soccer. The filing includes the minutes from the USSF’s annual general meeting held earlier this year, in which the budget going forward was set. U.S. Soccer expects USWNT international games to bring in more revenue than the USMNT games this year—and significantly more in 2017.

This filing should be read in the context of the ugly, drawn-out labor war between the women’s team and the USSF, which has manifested itself in battles over games held in stadiums with artificial turf, which the players deem dangerous. A December friendly in Hawaii was canceled, a day after Rapinoe tore her ACL training on the field.

Major League Soccer has some of the biggest stars in the world once they are over the top. No way the football women clubs of the US that noone has even heard about bring about more money than MLS. Their non-international careers and worth are what dictate their international pay........

Clint Dempsey, for example. He has a guaranteed compensation from 2015 of like $4,500,000 or something... He is not going to risk his livelihood and millions of dollars to play for the US team, if he gets paid the same as a National Women's Soccer League player who makes $40,000 a year...

If the US team wants the best male players to compete, they have to pay them commensurate to their worth in the sport.

Adding onto what I said above, Clint Dempsey would not by perturbed by having the same pay. He would be perturbed by having low pay.

And if they are to be paid the same, the female players would have to be paid far more than they are worth in the sport... Like the US team would have to pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars to participate on the national team, while they get paid peanuts in their respective clubs...

Doesnt matter if they are world champions or whatever the mens team earn more on beeing in the world cup than the women team makes on winning the thing, womens world cup is hardly watched by anyone mens world cup is one of the biggest sports events when it happens so ofc it will be alot more money involved. Thats not how it works dear It has nothing to do with what the team has won it has everything to do with the event and what it brings in on cash. Its typical women thinking what you are doing we got the same with the female norwegian team they might do alot better than the men but they dont earn money comparable cause noone cares to watch them.

National or club? MLS bring way more money than the female clubs, hence males are paid alot more cant have female players expect to earn as much when noone watches it. National level female world cup vs male world cup. Its not rocket science hardly anyone knew there was some female championship going on when its male every fourth year its worldwide. Men earn more in football as it brings more money with sponsors viewers and people going to the stadiums its not hard. Has nothing to do with if the team won shit they wont ever come close to men in earnings in football as long as they dont have the same interest from people. Except in America Womens Football is a pretty big deal. Their international side is fantastic too.
