Tennessee Legislature Passes bill to make the Holy Bible the State Book

Do you think states should be allowed to tacitly endorse a religious text? What Would Scalia Do? Supporters of this bill, is this different than a state endorsement of a religion, what some ME countries have been doing?

Your questions are of the leading type. Obviously this isn't going to go anywhere.

This is the dumb, might as well invite Islamist to immigrate to Tennessee if we are going to go back to holy texts dictating what is and is not moral.

It passed both houses, and has been sent to the governor 30 minutes ago.

Even as a reasonably religious person I think this is dumb. Separation of Church and State should be absolute, just as JFK once said in his somewhat famous speech on the topic.

Was it an issue voted on? If yes, then there is no problem. It was apparently what a majority wanted.

A ranking member of the MMOC OT conservative braintrust has arrived. So, there's no issue with a state endorsing a religious text in your eyes?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The constitution says otherwise, as do numerous SC decisions.

The First Amendment was never a restriction on the States; it was designed to be a restriction on the Federal Government.

"The Holy Bible is a history book,"
I shouldn't be surprised to see this, but I am and it saddens me.

Why pick a state book that has no relation to the state? Pretty confident Tennessee is not mentioned in the Bible.

Have they read this book? I would not want my children reading that, maybe something more tame like game of thrones.

Most of the original 10 amendments have been imposed on the state governments through the 14th. The first is one of them

So i guess you would be all for Muslims communities getting together and imposing Sharia as long as the majority voted for it to be so?

Considering that a "State Book" has about as much power over people's lives as a "state flower" or a "state bird" I fail to see the controversy here.

What are we gonna do now? Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
