    Root canal/tooth ache/ abscess problem.

Right, so the second tooth from the back on the right side of my mouth has had two root canal treatments done to it over the space of around 4 years or so. It has had many abscess' (sp?) probably around 8, two have caused root canal treatments, the others have been dealt with by amoxicillin or something.
But once again, its popped back up. I have no idea why this is. Its a constant throbbing feeling in my tooth, and (this may sound stupid) the more you thinking about it, the sorer it seems to get. It also seems to be sorer during different times of the day, maybe because im not thinking about it as much? I have no idea. Its starting to once again cause sleepless nights where I feel like clawing my face off in annoyance/pain, and Im all out of damn painkillers. Im hesistant to go back to the dentists because i just think they are gonna mess up more, as the first dentist i had who did the first root canal didnt do it right (hence why it got redone) and the tooth is bassicly 70% filling. If I do go, i can nearly garuntee being given the antibiotics to treat it, but I got this gut feeling they will screw the tooth up even more. Anyone got much advice or have/had similar problems?

May be spelling errors but arrghhhhh the pain.

This sounds like a hygienic or possibly dietary issue, if you have ongoing issues you'll likely have to change something, or have an undiscovered issue As far as going in, what choice do you "really" have?

    Change your dentist. Seriously.
Having two root canal treatments on the same tooth is most of the time just bad workmanship. Treating that with antibiotics is a little bit insane
Sometimes an external root canal treatment is necessary to do it clean. They cut the gums open an do it from the other side, too. (local anaesthesia most of the time)

Also this sounds like a systematic problem. Un-/bad- treated Gingivitis for example.

I was gonna say... 2 root canals and it still hurts? You should only ever have one of those per tooth. Sounds like they screwed up.

Like the above posters, ill say change your Dentist. I had 1 root canal treatment and it stopped hurting completely.
Treating with antibiotics its just postponing the inevitable.

Let me start off by saying, 2 root canal treatments makes no sense... A root canal = getting rid of the root = no more pain associated with that tooth ( no nerve to facilitate feeling = no pain )....

Now, if you went and only had 2 of the 3 parts of a root canal done, i can see where you are getting pain then. and having this done over the course of 4 years is just negligence on your behalf.

First off, when you get a root canal, they drill out the nerve, then pack the hole ( abscess ) with a temp filling consisting of Anti Bacterial compound and set an appointment to come back in 1-2 weeks to set the "post" if you will, which strengthens the actual tooth, call it a pole. After this post is set, they will fill it with another compound being of a shade consistent with the shade of your tooth. BUT ONLY after a regimen of Anti-biotics beyond the packed one in the abscess.

Throbbing of that tooth is now impossible... It is the tooth next to it, or hell even on the other side of your mouth. As redic. as it sounds, pain radiates from one side to the other. the Nerves are all interconnected.

When you have throbbing its the nerve telling you, " HEY FUCKER I'M INFECTED" go to any reputable dentist and get a script for Anti-biotics take them for the duration, revisit said dentist and tell them if there is still pain. yes it seems retarded, to take AB's then come back, but the reasoning behind this is... Can save the tooth/nerve if caught soon enough.

Now don't think I am bashing you, I am not, been there done that with tooth decay ( acid reflux = major culprit to enamel decay )

But seriously, if you ever got the post put into that tooth you had 2 prior RC treatments as you put it, go get the thing pulled, for I am sure by now, its already crumbling in your mouth. ( assuming the post and enamel bond wasnt done properly )

but in short, if you feel pain, its better to go, get it treated then go regularly. its way fucking cheaper to see a dentists every 4-6 months than to put up with the pain, discomfort and payments of dental surgery after.

    ALSO

yes they will give you antibiotics again, for throbbing does mean infection, and they cant treat properly til the infection is gone.

    Good luck to you

I feel ya. Been in that situation. Had one root canal done and whatever filling they put in it fell out like a week later. I was lucky enough that "something" that feels gum-like filled in the hole so I dont have any pain, but I cannot chew my food on that side. Before the root canal I used to have the sleepless nights as well, used to sit in the shower where the steam would cause the pain to lessen. All I can say is take ibuprofen and not tylenol to take the infection away if you dont want to get more amoxicillion. Also dont use any mouthwash or toothpaste with alcohol in it. Just makes it worse. P.S. Change dentists - Always ask to meet and talk to the dentist before you make any appointments.

    1) Get a new dentist
    2) Dont Panic
    3) Ever eaten any phosphorous? If so, say goodbye to your entire motherfucking jaw.

If antibiotics are still not working then you need either a new antibiotic, you might not have finished a previous course or not been given enough, so the bacteria are resistant. Avoid alcoholic mouthwash unless told to do so. Make sure you wash your fruit and vegetables better than you already are. Avoiding chewing on that side. Brush twice a day, floss daily, etc etc.

Anyone else notice OR know that you can't do any more then 1 root canal to a tooth.
Sounds like your dentist is taking you for a serious ride.

It's impossible to have a root canal after a successful one, but it's certainly not impossible to have multiples because something was missed. I've had 2 root canals on a single tooth and it still is a problem. The first one was thought to be successful and caused me major pain for a week afterwards until I went back in. During the second one, my dentist told me that my tooth was irregular and I had an extra root, so they tried again. The tooth still gets sore every so often, so my dentist is sending me to specialist to see if the entire thing needs to be removed.

Have it removed, have a consultation with your dentist/doctor about proper oral hygene. Things like this don't just "pop" back up, its a clear indicator of something going on that you either A: aren't paying attention to, or B: simply won't give up (habits such as chewing, smoking, drinking, licking the ass-holes of homeless people can cause serious infections when stacked with medical issues). Either way if you dont get these infections nailed down it could spread to your jaw bone, then its a whole new ball game.

Aye, back to him having a garbage dentist.

Also ~ if cost is an issue or IF you are looking for a great source, try to make an appointment at one of your local dentistry colleges. They are much cheaper and these kids are on the verge of being on their own. The time they are putting in is a necessity for them to get their license. All work is double checked pretty much, all the big jobs anyhow.

Aim for that. Get a decent kid instead of some thief.

Firstly, do you smoke? smoking causing infections in wounds (and will infect any cracks in the tooth or cuts in the gum) and also slows down the healing process.

secondly do you grind your teeth? this causes micro fissures which weakens the teeth and allows the plaque to cause decay.

also what is your diet? do you eat enough of the right foods? do you clean your mouth and teeth properly? i would say that the best mouthwash is saline solution (sea salt is best) but definitely do not swallow. be care full though, excessive use of pain killers ( codeine especially ) can cause stomach and bowel problems over a long period of use.

also your dentist may, as stated be crap, if all the above dont apply to you.

good luck, I know exactly how you feel its one of the worst pains in the world when a serious infection takes hold.

    This

I go to a family dentistry and my family dentist's son just graduated and started the other month. I was pretty worried about a very young person giving me a root canal. It ended up being awesome and im glad that i have a dentist i can trust for a long time. If you have to go twice for the same tooth its the dentist.

    Red face

It seems to be an hygienic problem. The solution is to take pain reliever, antibiotics and perform hygienic measures as brushing your teeth after meals, taking a bath every day and etc.

Toothache or tooth pain is most often caused by the dental pulp, or the ligament surrounding a tooth, becoming inflamed. This causes pain in and around the teeth and jaw. Dental pulp is a delicate tissue in the centre of a tooth that contains sensitive nerves and blood vessels and it can become inflamed for several reasons. And routine checkup by Las vagus dental implants, they are best dentist ever and provide affordable treatment.
