Dutch journalist arrested in Tureky after critisizing Erdogan

    http://www.straitstimes.com/world/mi...cising-erdogan

    Erdogan going full Kim-Jong Un?

A Dutch journalist was arrested early Sunday (April 24) at her home in Turkey for tweets deemed critical of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to her Twitter account.

"Police at the door. No joke," wrote Ebru Umar, a well-known atheist and feminist journalist of Turkish origin.

Umar recently wrote a piece critical of Erdogan for the Dutch daily Metro, extracts of which she then tweeted, leading to her arrest.

"I'm not free, we're going to the hospital" for a medical examination before being taken to face prosecutors, she said in a second tweet as she left her home in Kusadasi, a resort town in western Turkey.

The Dutch foreign ministry said in a tweet that it was in "close contact with" Umar and "local authorities" and the Dutch embassy in Istanbul was "actively engaged" in the case, which had its "full attention".

Umar, who reportedly became a journalist under the influence of Theo van Gogh - a Dutch filmmaker later murdered for making a controversial film about Islamic culture - had written in the Metro about a diplomatic spat between Turkey and the Netherlands.

A political storm erupted this week over reports an email sent by the Turkish consulate to Turkish organisations in the Netherlands asked people to forward emails and social media posts which insult Erdogan or Turkey.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he would ask Ankara to clarify the call, saying it was not clear what the Turkish government aims to achieve.

The Turkish consulate for its part said the note was sent by a consular official who used an "unfortunate choice of words" that was misinterpreted.

The case followed outrage in Germany after the government there gave a green light for authorities to begin criminal proceedings against popular comic Jan Boehmermann for performing a satirical poem about Erdogan.

Trials in Turkey for insulting Erdogan have multiplied since his election to the presidency in August 2014, with nearly 2,000 such cases currently open.

If she does not get released, I hope the government will consider sanctions.
She posted the article while she was in the Netherlands.

But kind of stupid of her to visit Turkey during these times.

And meanwhile some within the Turkish-Dutch community are cheering for Erdogan in the hopes that "that bitch" gets locked up for talking shit about "their Turkey" and that she belongs in the zoo because she is lower than an animal.

So how is that integration going for them?

They only care about Turks who support Erdogan, she's probably a 'traitor' in their eyes.

If Europe can be saved... if Europe is worth saving... Erdogan should be under pretty much a 24/7 saturation attack of online insults.

Maybe send him some new goats to get her out of the country?

How inconsistent Erdowahn is... a german journalist did get rejected and had to fly back some days ago .

Going to turkey while a witch hunt is going on after doing the thing the witch hunt is about is totally a smart idea.

closer the Eu/Turkish border, shutdown diplomatic contacts and just let Erdogan stew in his own mess.

It would be a proper response to all the shit he keeps pulling but the EU is a pushover so they keep sucking up to him...
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

The Turkish-Dutch community is well integrated. But that's because most of them are of Kurdish decent. The vocal minority who say these things are often affiliated with the Grey Wolves.

    • She's hardly a journalist. She writes garbage opinion columns for a free newspaper that people can pick up at train stations.
    • Criticism of Erdogan is giving her a bit too much credit. It's usually just uneducated and sensationalist hate spewing towards him. A recent example of her column, regarding the news of Turkish consulates in the Netherlands asking Dutch-Turks to report insults towards Erdogan, has her comparing people who would heed the call to NSB-ers (Nazi collaborators) and telling them to "go fuck themselves and to give Erdogan a good fucking while they're at it".
    • She's 2nd generation Dutch-Turkish, the Uncle Tom type of Dutch-Turkish. That is the only reason she has any sort of following at all, because she just loves making other Dutch-Turks and other minorities in the Netherlands look like backwards idiots in order to get appreciation from racist/biased Dutch people. The only reason the Turkish part of her nationality/ethnicity is left out now is because she is riding the hate train towards non-Western Dutch citizens.
    • She breaks the laws in Turkey so she gets arrested, big deal. You can disagree with a law but that doesn't mean you have the right to break it or that a country doesn't have the right to act upon it.
    • She is a diehard Atatürk supporter, and one could argue that Atatürk was a dictator in his own right and social media in Turkey has been silenced plenty of times over satires or criticism of Atatürk as well. Insulting Atatürk can result in up to 6 years in prison in Turkey. In other words, she's a hypocrite at best.

Don't give her more attention than she deserves, which is very little. She's just a nobody who exploits her ethnic background for publicity.

Oh and the fact that she writes and uploads her bullshit in the Netherlands doesn't mean that she's therefore immune to the laws of Turkey once she enters Turkey. In fact, until recently the Turkish law that forbids insulting the Turkish nation or its government among other things, had a part in it where breaking this law as a Turkish citizen OUTSIDE of Turkey would lead to a 30% increase on top of the usual punishment. I'm not sure if she still has her Turkish nationality and passport, but in case she does she's just as much Turkish as she's Dutch and especially as a Turkish citizen she has the responsibility to adhere to Turkish law, whether she likes it or not.

    u wot m8?

The majority of Dutch-Turks are pretty traditional Sunni Muslims and ethnic Turks, and probably the majority of them support Erdogan and the AKP. Erdogan got quite a lot of votes from them in the past election. Grey Wolves are indeed a minority, but they are affiliated with MHP which is an opposition party that's not on great terms with the AKP (Erdogan's party). That being said though, seeing how Ebru Umar often insults Turks and Islam in general I can see how even they would support AKP and Erdogan in this matter.

I'm 100% ethnically Dutch but whatever.

She breaks the Turkish law and she is in Turkey. It doesn't matter at all what kind of passport you have. You break the law in a country and you're fucked. Or do you not know about the dozens of Dutch citizens locked up indefinitely in shithole Asian and South American prisons for (alleged) drug trafficking? Their Dutch passports didn't save them there, so why should the fact that this woman has a Dutch passport grant her any sort of immunity or impunity to the Turkish law? Especially when you consider that she probably still has a Turkish passport as well. Her committing her crime outside of Turkey doesn't mean shit, especially considering her offence is spreading certain thoughts that are considered a crime in Turkey in public and social media.

And also, her "fuck erdogan" tweets were tweeted while she was in her family vacation home in Turkey, which is also "her own country".

We have this thing in the west called "freedom of speech" and "press freedom". We make fun of our royal family all the time, that's called banter, mate. However, Erdogan is something along the lines of a dictator (à la Franco) and will show you the hand of "justice" when you dare impede him.

He's no better than the feminazis who are offended by everything.
