The GoP was given power and squandered it, ignoring their core principles. So yeah, of course it's dying. It'd be scarier if it wasn't.

Now we just have to hope that all the liberal principles that are chugging along nicely in the world/U.S. pan out. Collapse of both the financial system and the traditional family are going to cause a lot of suffering in the long run, but I'm just an ignorant puritan, so what do I know.

And that's sort of the thing why the OP doesn't mean much. If the view of republican as the financial system was collapsing and Bush was proclaiming a self fixing economy, only resulted in less than a 7% differance in popular vote... 33% unfavorable rating doesn't mean much... There will still be people who see future financial crisis coming from the left and will still support policy, like those against minimum wage increases, that force families to be dual income homes and erode actual family values.
