Trudeau turns down Russian, U.S., Mexican offers to help battle Fort McMurray fires

    http://globalnews.ca/news/2689492/tr.../?sf25936602=1

OTTAWA – Russia, the U.S., Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority have all offered help in fighting the northern Alberta wildfire, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says there’s no need for international assistance.

Last week Vladimir Puchkov, the Russian minister of emergency measures, offered to send heavy water bombers and specialized crews to battle the fire that’s been raging out of control near Fort McMurray.

A number of other offers have also been made since the crisis emerged last week and they have been reviewed against requirements, said John Babcock, a spokesman for Global Affairs Canada.

Canada sincerely appreciates the international support, but it isn’t necessary, Trudeau told a news conference Monday. Water bombers and firefighters from other provinces, including Ontario, B.C., Quebec and New Brunswick, are getting a handle on the situation, he added.

“There is no doubt that people around the world have been marked by this disaster and have been very generous in their offers of support, but the reality is with all of the assistance of people across this country, we don’t need help from other countries at this time,” he said in French.
He is right. Canada can more than handle this situation by themselves.

This was shared 30K+ times on facebook and this is just by this one website. It's a major news story.

There is nothing to discuss. It doesn't belong on a discussion forum.

A major news story, for Canada...I am fairly sure the rest/most of the world gives little more than a ,"Hey that sucks for them, hope everyone makes it out ok" thought...before moving on with their lives.

Esp. since Canada doesn't "need" help.
Who cares other than those who are in it,dealing with it or are related to those people?..oh, and the News Groups / Bloggers.

I am obligated to think about it only when I see a news story on it(case in point) or it flashes across my feeds for some reason.
Then, I think ...what I said earlier...and go make another cup of coffee.

Actually we could discuss as to whether this is the right move.

It's like the head of TEPCO remaining adamant that everything is under control at Fukushima and there was no need to power down the reactors or anything XD

I fail to see how this is an example. We have plenty of resources for containing wildfires. Because we always get lots of giant wildfires this time of year. The Fort Mac fire is only getting news attention because it hit a city (which was built in a forested area because money). There's bigger fires currently burning but they aren't threatening as many people. Like there's a 10,000 hectare one in my province right now.

I think Canadian firefighters have helped with our wildfires in the past.

Supposed to rain if it hasn't all ready.

Funny that all the actual political scientists say otherwise.

The words "political scientists" is an oxymoron. I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

Or this thread is full of people who don't live in a country with a contiguous densely forested region nearly the size of the United States and thus don't have an actual clue about forest fire management.

Why he is a grade A idiot ? If there is no rain, 500 more airbone firefighters are not going to help that much. Likewise, Canada can perfectly handle alone 100 000 evacuees and the assorted costs.

No it's not. They are the ones who actually know what they're talking about, not some random keyboard warrior.
