Sargeras might not be purely evil.

Repasting from a super old "leak" post that was complete right on about pretty specific things like Illidan becoming the light/dark chosen one. This also makes sense in terms of setting up the Burning Legion, Old Gods and Void Lords as all equal "dark" forces in the universe.

Countless worlds knew me as their guardian…

...I was trusted to uphold the Oath, to defend the creations that my brothers and sisters worked tirelessly to perfect.

The Nathrezim came from the darkest regions of the universe. They were the greatest threat to the mortals that I have ever witnessed. Without mercy, the demons invaded other planets, slaughtering and burning anything that resisted. To a lesser being, an intimidating foe. I was charged with the extermination of their race upon their homelands, foreign to most of my kind. By my hand, they were vanquished and imprisoned. But within their planet I sensed a great, living darkness. A parasite of worlds. A real danger to my own people. I have been enlightened as to why the demons have suddenly encroached upon other territories. It was not for conquest, but to escape.

I tried to warn my brethren. I advised to abandon the lesser beings to protect our own kind. However, their weakness for the mortal pets kept our strength divided. They do not comprehend what threatens us beyond their high walls. They do not understand the nature of conflict as I do. The weak perish, the strong prevail. So it is, so it has always been.

What is life worth? Countless eons of battle? Our own planet? We have already sacrificed so much for their survival. For what? The mortals only dishonor us. The approaching shadows I've seen will inevitably consume all life. All my efforts to protect them will be in vain. We cannot tax ourselves with responsibility for them at the expense of vulnerability. My brothers and sisters foolishly cling to their archaic Oath. I will not risk our own people over such insignificant creatures.

I have freed my prisoners of war. Creatures of immense power from across the nether, bound to my will. The greatest army ever known. My brothers and sisters of the Pantheon, allow me to simplify your divided attention. Watch as I destroy the mortals you hold more dear than your own people. I accept that in doing so I will be your enemy, but take comfort in knowing I am also your savior."

    - Sargeras, the Guardian

Sargeras has a noble goal - preventing the Old Gods from corrupting a Titan and the known universe - but his answer is to burn everything and start over. So, what? We just lie down and die saying, "Oh noble and good Sargeras, burn us until there is nothing left!"

Everything you just said is just differently worded from what Chronicle book says. I don't see how this is new information or why it needed a thread of it's own.

Oh, at this point and after Chronicles, and given Blizzard's fascination of this kinda stuff, it's almost a given.

I think very few people believe Sargeras is evil, he's probably more of a chaotic good ''for the greater good'' kind of guy.

After all this time of doing the things he's done, yeah, I'd say he's evil. (whatever his intent started as) What surprised so many folks in the Chronicle is that they learned that he's neither crazy or entirely wrong in his motivation. (which is quite unsettling to be able to understand things from his perspective)

Chronicles just turned Sargeras into Arthas on a cosmic scale.

    Same with Arthas purging Stratholme.

One-dimensional characters belong in saturday morning cartoons :P

Sargeras reminds me of Illidan. He decided the ends justified the means, even if that means allying with lesser evils to defeat a greater one.

sargeras redemption would be superb. imagine a being with a mane of fire, evil, and brutal, and chaotic SUDDENLY turning light... a mane of light, powerful, benevolent, awesome. it would be a million times cooler than Illidan or Tyrael being awesome.

    That's not how redemption works.

Good and evil are very subjective things usually decided by who is left standing at the end of the confrontation. Which is why "the good guy always wins" mentality exists. I am sure in his mind Sargeras is doing what he believes is right for the universe as a whole. It just kinda sucks for those that get subjugated and/or destroyed in the process. Since technically that is his goal with the people of the planet we MMO in he is, from our perspective, evil. Unless of course you are a part of some strange Sargeras cult that buys what he is selling and are willing to get snuffed out to prove it. "Join him in his holy vision" type of shit. Redemption is of course a direction it can go but that is something that has yet to pass. So for the time being..

Except Sargeras doesn't ally with the legion to defeat the greater evil. He allies with the legion to destroy everything so the greater evil can't technically win, because there won't be anything left to win.

That's batshit crazy, not "chaotic good".

Learning about the void lords destroyed Sargeras. He is beyond good or evil, he is insane.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It worked for Grom at the end of WoD.

Sargeras is essentially flipping the monopoly board to prevent the other players from getting any properties. He's just throwing a hissy fit by going "Well If I can't win I'm gonna make damn well sure no one else can too!"

Sargeras is still the ultimate evil(Excluding the Void Lords) in the universe. He's willing to destroy other planets and even Azeroth with many great good and powerful heroes even if it means to prevent the Void Lords from winning this...ludicrous cosmic war.

I mean, that thread was just some guy's fan concept idea that a chinese site confused for an actual leak, so you maybe shouldnt use that as a basis. He also didn't mention Illidan at all, from what I'm finding.

That's not really what happened, but it's close enough. We've know Sargeras's motivation since Chronicle Vol. 1 came out.

He's a misguided villlain that believes the ends justify the means, but a villain nonetheless. He wants to destroy the universe to save it.

And, frankly, the vast majority if his followers are pure evil and are only in it because they get to cause chaos and suffering.

Even in the older lore he was originally a noble Titan, who fell to darkness. That's still broadly true. His crusade against the Void Lords essentially drove him to madness.
