Mexico Could Be the Next Great Power

Many people would be stunned to find that the Mexican economy is ranked right up with the U.K. and Italy.

Mexico has the 11th-highest GDP in the world based on purchasing power parity, according to the International Monetary Fund. As Europe weakens, it will be in the top 10 in the not-too-distant future.

Yet, this country is regarded by many Americans as a Third World nation, dominated by drug cartels and impoverished people desperate to get into the United States.

Obviously, Mexico is not as developed as Britain is. Like most nations transitioning from underdevelopment to greater development, Mexico suffers from substantial class and regional inequality.

But it doesn't change the basic reality of Mexico’s relative strength.

Mexico Has One of the Leading Economies in the World

While it is true that organized crime exists in Mexico and that many Mexicans want to immigrate to the US, a roughly equal number are leaving the US and returning to Mexico… drawn by economic opportunities in their home country.

The largest auto plant in the Western Hemisphere is in Mexico, and Bombardier builds major components for aircraft there. Mexico has many problems, of course, but so does the U.K. (the 10th-largest economy) and Italy (12th).

Maybe this coincides with the fact that more illegal aliens from Mexico in the US are leaving across the border than are coming in.

The UK has a stubbed toe, Mexico has gangrene. Not all problems are equal.

Every few months we're told who the next NIC/MEDC/super power will be and it never comes to fruition. This is nothing new.

Maybe in about 100 years... Would take a serious internal cleansing and an almost civil war to clean up the gangs though

That's because idiots think it happens overnight. The US has been on a downward spiral for about 40 years while other countries have been trending upwards. Its a basic cycle you can see repeated throughout history, eventually every government falls, every empire collapses and a new one rises in its place. Just a matter of time...

Sure mexico could, mexico is so corrupt and inefficient, its a disaster. They work for like 10 bucks a day, it strikes me as funny that the left so loves mexico. Here they want 15 bucks an hour but in mexico its ok if they work for 1 dollar an hour.

There is currently uncurable corruption at every level of the Mexican society, and it's not getting better anytime soon.

I think it will be. It is sending all of it's liabilities to the US. Eventually, there will be only the successful people left. Plus they have: beaches, tequila, tacos, margaritas and burritos. Damn! Come to think of it, I am moving to Mexico.....

Doubt it. One huge barrier in becoming a great power is corruption. All countries have some corruption, but from a point onwards it becomes so prevalent that it simply stops all efforts made by the country in gaining power. Generally it takes a few generations of people who actually want to solve these problems and are educated enough for them to start disappearing. Currently Mexico is not ready. Maybe in 50-100 years if they haven't united with another country by then.

That must be why Trump wants to wall them off. He's scared of the inevitable Mexican superpower takeover of the United States.

That hollow immigration excuse everyone knows is bullshit must just be a ploy. I mean, no one could honestly be that stupid, right?

can't be a "great power" when gangs control a larger portion of your country than the government.

In due time Mexico will build a wall and make US pay for it.

Quite a different picture when you look at GDP/PPP per person...big countries, big totals.

They are by far our second largest exporter. Only Canada is bigger and China is in 3rd, with nearly a 3rd less exporting from US than Mexico.

LOL, they'll never be any sort of power, they can't even keep their own country under control. Even Zimbabwe has better chances to become a power.
Besides, the next President will build a wall around it.

If they manage to get rid of corruption at all levels of society and the plague of paramilitary criminal gangs sure why not.

Well at least we know they can afford that wall.
