You have to recognize where groups like ISIS come from. It from a group that feels like they've gotten a raw deal and don't have any ability to get even a reasonable compromise for themselves.
For ISIS in particular, here is a great 6 minute video describing how they came to power (starting all the way back in 1979):
Even before 1979, the US caused a lot of problems in the Middle East (including supporting Israel as well as Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini), which is part of the long-running hate for the West since we've been interfering in their affairs for many decades now (pretty much just because of the oil in reality).
For some groups, just being reasonable would cut out most of the problems (e.g. if Israel would stop trying to settle Palestinian lands, most, but not all, of those conflicts would go away). For truly extreme groups such as ISIS, it takes a long time of education of the public so that they understand a) the horrors of what ISIS does to innocents and b) alternatives that can be worked with in civilized society.
For b to work, however, it does take conscience effort to truly integrate and support those people into our society. If you look at the individual terrorists in Paris and other attacks in Europe, you find individuals that were shunned from their society and not really supported. It really isn't surprising that those individuals turn to actual extremism as a result...basically, the society that shunned them because of their fears created the very thing they were afraid of.
