What's 4chan's reputation as "scariest internet website" based on?

This is a fairly sensitive topic so it may as well be a short and sweet description. Now, I am in no way promoting this website but a few months ago I saw a thread on MMO C about what the "scariest" website on the internet is. 4chan was a pretty strong contender, and so I decided to genuinely educate myself since. I know there are subsections of that site that are less than pleasant, but I anonymously browse the video game and Japanese-related boards time to time and apart from the memes and shitposting there is nothing I find to be intimidated by. On another name, I even met numerous, normal people in some games I play that don't even remotely radiate any psychopathic tendencies like I initially expected.

So while it's a very safe and neutral approach I am taking with my occasional observations, I want to know what is the real reason the site is feared and reviled. Are there dark secrets related to murder or animal abuse or some conspiracy? What should I really FEAR because so far my ventures to it are no different from reddit or tumblr. That is to say, it's not overly exotic or too interesting.

It's not that bad, haven't been there in a while though.

In the earlier years, when it was still a pretty unknown board, it was used to anonymously share child porn pics and gore and everything else you could think of, but that was just a tiny fraction. Then there were those who would gather there and plan who to strike with cyber attacks for jokes and giggles. With the passing of the years all those people moved on to .onion sites and /b/ remained simply a cesspool of porn, dirty minds, and stupidity, fueled by masses of new arrivals who had neither the will or knowledge for truly darker/illegal stuff, so they just ended up the "tits or gtfo", occasional gore, porn sharing, mischieving den it is today.

Because there's no personal accountability. If anything happen's it's usually "4chan [verb] [thing]" or thereabouts. When there's no one to tie to events you end up with all the "fame" being tied into the platform which contributes to it's infamy.

There's also the actual content which in cases is something that would be simply removed on most other websites.

fascinating my man. Though I won't delve any further into the depravity, this does enlighten me.

But in conclusion, what you're saying is as of today there's not much to be scared of?

People are still holding on to things /b/ did literally over 10 years ago to this day.
It's just been word of mouth, people tell their friends to avoid 4chan, who tell their friends to avoid 4chan, and so on.
I've seen numerous people here complain about the layout, which I'm sure turns a lot of people off of the site at first as well. I don't even remember how I used to get by without 4chanx.
Basically, moot wanted to talk about anime. Something Awful users that were perma'd from SA came over to /b/ and saw it as a place to do whatever they want, so they made /b/ a total shithole. They occasionally did funny stuff, but most of it was just dumb.
Most 4chan users look down pretty heavily on /b/rowsers and try to not associate with the board as much as possible.

    -t. a /v/, /vg/, /tv/, /mu/ browser.

edit: this thread made me realize I've been going to 4chan for over 10 years, fucking kill me

Well, there's the rare gore picture, and lots of porn, but aside from that there's nothing illegal or "bad".

Keep in mind I'm talking about /b/, a subforum of 4chan. The other other are quite "normal", or as normal as it can be.

EDIT: Oh, even though the "tradition" is less present these days, /b/ still gets loaded with furry porn on fridays, so beware that.

Well I never visit that one. The ones I visit almost every day anonymously are

    /a/, /v/, /vg/, /co/, and /jp/

In response to your original question though, /b/ is what gave 4chan a bad rep originally. Nowadays its a sort of containment board for edgy retards that unironically thing /b/ is funny

Illegal shit gets posted on /b/ but let's not pretend that the 4chan community at large doesn't look down on that sort of thing.
Threads are immediately reported and removed, and there have been more than a couple animal abuse cases and one legit murder solved by /b/ internet-detectiving

It was bad(but there are still other websites, which are far worse than 4chan), because there were plenty of weird porn/gore/stupid photos/videos.

Now you can only find stupid hentai, sometimes pictures of gays, trolls, and new memes. That's all...
Even users from 4chan started to be more carefully and soft after these years.

Someone there made a thread after they captured what I think was a rat or a chipmunk on a glue trap. They asked how to kill it, and someone said to stick a knife slowly in its abdomen. He ustreamed the torture of the animal, half were egging him on, half were just speechless and another part of that half wanted to call the cops/beat them up. Regardless, the stream was shut down pretty quickly by the looks of it, and I have no doubt someone swatted the guy.

Reddit or tumblr would never allow that sorta shit, let alone archive the thread.

-Dead people or dying people (normally they are way more detailed than what i would like)
    -Memes
    -Failed memes
    -Full of Assholes
    -Full of interesting ideas

No they're not. That one I mentioned earlier is archived and was never deleted. I guess if they're not cats, animal abuse is fair game?

there isnt much to back it up
all the dark place, filled with criminals and haxors elite is a myth

There are much much darker places on the net.. filled with proper degenerates, not edgy basement dwellers

4chan is basically where the deep web leaks into the regular web.
