Gays arrested by Moscow police for leaving flowers at US embassy

Can't the Russians give Russian gays a 2 day moratorium or something?

    http://www.france24.com/en/20160613-...rlando-tribute

    MOSCOW (AFP) -

A Russian gay couple were arrested Monday while trying to leave a tribute outside the US embassy in Moscow to victims of the Orlando shooting rampage, the RBK newspaper reported.

Islam Abdullabeckov, a social media editor for the newspaper, and his boyfriend Felix Glyukman were trying to leave flowers and a sign reading "Love wins - Stay with Orlando" outside the embassy when they were detained, they told RBK.

"The police arrested us straight away and put us in their car for so-called 'unauthorised action'," Abdullabeckov said.

"We only wanted to express our condolences for the murder of these people and we had not at all planned any kind of political act," he added.

The two men, who list themselves as being in a relationship on Facebook, posted photos on the website that they took inside the police car.

"This is completely surreal," Abdullabeckov wrote in a caption.

Glyukman added: "We tried to leave flowers and a sign at the embassy -- we did not succeed."

He also posted a photo of himself in detention on Instagram with his sign fallen to the ground.

A pile of flowers and candles have been left outside the US embassy in Moscow, a day after Omar Mateen gunned down 49 people in a gay nightclub in the Florida resort city of Orlando.

The attack, which the Islamic State group says was carried out on its behalf, has sparked an outpouring of grief and anger around the world, with Russian President Vladimir Putin branding the killings "a barbaric crime".

But gay rights demonstrations are systematically banned in Russia, where homosexuality was a criminal offence until 1993 and categorised as a mental illness until 1999.

The LGBT community in Russia continues to suffer widespread homophobia.

Well, that's not what they were arrested for. The relevant part is:

"a social media editor for the newspaper"

Working in independent media in an authoritarian country is always a lottery; you never know whether and when they will come for you. It is twice as sickening in this particular case, since they were arrested when expressing solidarity with the victims of a mass murder. If the authorities in Russia had at least a bit of humanity and decency in them, they would, at least, do it in less improper circumstances.

I thought gays could be arrested in Russia for showing signs of being gay?

I think we've finally found a topic too toxic for the Putin cheer-leading squad to defend, considering this has been up for well over an hour now.

I'm not sure about that. There are gay pride parades in Russia sometimes, and not everyone gets arrested, so I don't think that's the case - but then, Russia isn't the kind of country in which the police cares about law much...

I think it's just that it is night in Europe/Russia currently. Give it 6-7 hours, and the usual suspects will show up.

They got arrested for violation of the (shitty) law, which prescribes order of getting authorization for demonstration. I don't think there was any anti-LGBTQ subtext, just poorly written law and overenthusiastic cops.

That's not why they were arrested.

According to this article. There was a couple of dudes, who were arrested for organising an unauthorised meeting, it's illegal in Russia to do this kind of things w/o approval from government. Both were released soon after.

Yes, this is the official statement. Problem is, it's really easy to violate this law, because it's written poorly and VERY vague.

Widespread homophobia ? So this is in the news but something like this isn't https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vev-OzHQy94

I wonder why do they never talk in the news when a gay person is killed in one of the 10 muslim states that has a death penalty on gays.

I don't agree with what happens in Russia. I think its horrible. But I am so annoyed when the media takes time to talk about these issues but never talks about the muslim world and the orthodoxy they have on gay people.
I think Turkey is one of the two countries in the middle east that allows gay people legally, the other being israel. And in turkey gays are treated similar to how you see them treated in russia

They never talk? Who "they"? The threads on rights of homosexuals in the Middle East are not a rarity on these forums alone. There is a thread nearby in which exactly that was discussed just a few hours ago.
