Windows 7 update service stuck and won't stop using my cpu. LF help

So today I noticed my cpu running at 40 degrees during idle, so I looked at my cpu multiplier and realise something is using my cpu as its not idling. So off I go to check my processes and realise svchost is the culprit, "great, that could only be a 100 things" so the first thing I do is disable the windows update service to see if it stops, sure thing it does. So I enable it again and I figure I let it do its thing.

Move forward 4hours, its still doing whatever it is doing. I think wtf this should have been done by now so I go and check the windowsupdate.log

Its just filled with this same thing looping constantly, I can't disable windows update service as it decides to restart itselfs 5minutes later. (Well I know a few ways of forcing it to stay dead but clearly something is wrong and i'd rather resolve it.)
    Code:

I got all optionals downloads disabled and honestly have no clue wtf it is doing. I tried manually looking for updates and it just gets stuck when doing so.

Anyone got a idea how to resolve this?

Edit: things ive tried, system restoring, checking for malware/virus, manually attempting to update the system.

I'm Having the same issue, I have been unable to Update my computer in almost 2 years.

When i try to do the updates its searches for 30 minutes and when i start the download it just does nothing for an hour and then i get an error message saying it can't connect to the server or something. (I am not at home otherwise i would be able to specify better)

See if you can do anything with the Convenience Rollup, effectively a service pack 2 for windows 7.

Comments there suggest that the normal update service has been broken for a while now.

You have to disable Windows Updates temporarily and download this particular update from Microsoft

Probably a subtle hint to upgrade to windows 8-10. They dropped support for Windows 7 right? Or is that soon.

Officially extended support for Windows 7 runs for many years yet, January 2020 for "extended support" whatever that means exactly.
I would argue why they would bother with that Rollup if the intent was to move people on.
However you are right that "mainstream support" has ended for Windows 7, in January 2015.
Though admittedly it isn't openly advertised, so may be more aimed at the business crowd.

I think they should do it properly, as a service pack and have it downloadable in full for offline installs.

So I went to make/eat dinner and I came back and refreshed the log file, it has now downloaded 11 updates and said its done. Gonna reboot to install these updates and i'll inform you if it resolved itself. Here is hoping. Thank you guys so far for the advice and I'll definately try the above if this did not do the job.

Just as a minor update, my windows updates have been functioning fine before this, had the usual security updates few days ago etc.

Edit: seems to have been resolved, what baffles me is that 11 updates with a combined size of 51mb takes a total of 5hours to download and prep for install but whatever, thanks for all the support and i'm still confused what went wrong for it to error loop like that.

Yeah I had something similar happening to my laptop running win8.1 a while back, acted really weird when doing an update for a long time but eventually got there.
