i'm not into the whole being a hero thing.. i'd rather be the villain tbh.
Personally, I preferred it was I was just an adventurer.
I agree on the last part - switched to GW2 somewhere this spring, and this game still cannot hold me. Aimless is the exact word to describe my experience.
OT - there's no denying that it does sound very silly when you read in the game or wowwiki about some great villian, terrifying nations, entire civilizations even, that he ended up being defeated by "a group of adventurers". Does sound stupid and anticlimactic, no?
Why not? FFXIV is one of the most immersive MMO's I've played when it comes to the story, and there you are the legendary Warrior of Light.
No, it's not a good idea at all. It especially falls flat when you as an individual are supposed to be *the* savior, until you meet up with someone else who has the same exact title.
If anything, I'd take it a step further and say that a player should need to strike some sort of balance between combat abilities and crafting abilities. Each would have a dependency on each other for various things (crafters need combatants for city defense, escort to dangerous areas, etc, and combatants need crafters for armor / weaponry etc)
And that game also has you start off as a mere adventurer and work your way up, with you starting to gain recognition largely after you defeat Ifrit the first time and collimating in being recognized as a Warrior of Light in 2.0. I think part of the difference is FF XIV forces you go through a single, linear main story quest while WoW tends to break the story out by zone.
I play my WoW mage to conquer the greatest foes of Azeroth. Sometimes they are Dragons, Demons, etc.
I've been playing WoW for 10+ years, same character. I've been using the same title since Wrath, and it feels part of my character's personal lore.
In Legion, I'm a little disappointed not to be the Guardian, but I understand that's a little more central to WoW's lore/storytelling.
But I am very happy to be the leader of all the Mages of Azeroth to counter a SPACE ARMY OF DEMONS.
After Legion, *shrug* Will it take breaking our artifact weapons to seal of Sargeras's tomb? I'm okay with that. Would rather keep it, but w/e the story demands.
Maybe we can all retire on our farms. Then Blizz can introduce a new crafting profession: whittling.
'Cause it looks like all the HEROES Azeroth needs are a bunch of whiny, sniveling, complainers, who don't want to be Heroes.
You're right, you're the leader of all the Mages of Azeroth, except that every single other Mage is also the leader of all the Mages of Azeroth.
The current direction of the story, taking a single-player template and mashing it ham-handedly onto an MMO, is fucking stupid.
Shit, maybe next expansion we can all just literally be Thrall.

It doesn't make sense to make our characters seem like we're this legendary hero in Azeroth and Draenor because there's millions of other "heroes" and commanders being treated the same way. So I find it hard for me to buy into this "hero" status the game puts on me because it's like well if I'm this legendary commander guy who is this guy decked out mythic raid gear? It's like they do this to try and make the game more immersive which it does sometimes but most of the time it actually does the opposite because you want to believe you're "The One" but you're just one of millions. Just doesn't work for an MMO.

Yep. Wrath was set up the right way - you're just another face in the boat of volunteers going to Northrend to help out - you even have to get in line to sign up when you get there. Then, you survive to the end, helping break down the doors to Icecrown.
WOD...wheee, we get to run a supply depot, pushing buttons so NPCs pretend to do quests the player should be doing...and all alone.
At least they're finally starting to admit their experiment in WOD failed.
Actually you don't
Quest:Enlistment Day
"You've come to enlist, right? Normally you'd have to stand in line like the other recruits. Normally you'd be out of luck because the recruitment ledger's gone missing and I can't process anyone until the new books come.
Fortunately for you, <name>, I've heard about you and what you did in Outland. To be honest, you're a cut above these poor saps. Lines aren't for you.
Go to the barracks and speak to General Arlos. He'll be more than happy to meet with someone of your caliber"
The history follows your deeds. From a nobody in vanilla >A hero in Outland>CHampion of the Light Northrend>Savior of the World>Agent of the King/Warchief special forces in Pandaria>>Commander in Draenor>>Insert your class title
They have stated that according to lore you're the only real "hero".. And pretty much all your friends that you play with / raid with are just "npcs". Everything is always directed at you in the quest line's regardless of being in a group or not haha. Dont think about it to much.
