Chile won the centenary copa america against Argentina

This was to have been the match that sealed Lionel Messi’s legacy. The one that silenced the doubters, that killed off the question mark hanging over his greatness, that gave him his place in the pantheon next to Diego Maradona and showed he could achieve the same success with Argentina that has become so staggeringly routine at club level. Instead, it became The Night Messi Missed...

It was realy nice to win again against Argentina, there is even info that messi retired from his national team after this loss....

And Messi just said he's retiring from international competition. All these flavors... and you choose to be salty

a lot more players than just Messi are retiring. Aguero and Mascherano have announced their "retirement". There are others who are rumored to be "retiring" in the next few days. Reading between the lines, it is very much a protest against their FA.

As a Brit, seeing Argentina getting knocked out in the finals is nearly as great as it will be when Wales win the Euros!

Yeah I definitely misspoke. I honestly thought the losses had just taken a toll on him mentally but it appears to be much more than that. They have world cup qualifier matches in August and October so not much time to get this all straightened out, plus the South American competition is no joke, through 6 of 18 qualifying matches Brazil currently would not qualify to even make a playoff, they would just be out. Scary for their fans

I watched the first half. it was terrible. The referee was atrocious. Both the red cards were absolutely poor referee-ing. And once both teams were down to 10, the quality of the match just crashed.

As for Messi - he is the best player of his generation and arguably the third best in the history of the game. And a Copa or WC win or loss won't change that fact.

Lots of nations have talked about 'golden generations' but for this Argentina side with the likes of Messi/Aguero/Higuaín/Lavezzi in attack and Mascherano/Di Maria/Biglia in midfield to win nothing is a real waste.
