Ok, some things about the build: I'd like to run WoW Legion at 1080p/60 FPS at high (not neccesarily Ultra) details and some form of decent anti-aliasing. I would like an upgrade path to smooth 4k gaming or VR in 2 years when the next gen GPUs are out.
I'd also like to do some mild overclocking, so I am looking for suggestions for a HSF and wanted to ask whether the PSU is sufficient when both CPU and GPU are running a very conservative OC with normal gaming load. Not planning any Furmark and Prime95 orgies either.
Reviews say it handles up 500W load just fine and the next step up (SF600) is louder and more expensive. I know a bigger case would be better but I don't have the room for it because it needs to be kind of portable.
The i5-6600K has a significantly higher TDP rating than the i5-6660. Does it actually run hotter at stock speeds or is that just Intel calculating some headroom for the OC?
I am on the fence on whether or not overclocking is worth it. I figure WoW is quite CPU intensive so the extra clockspeed would be welcome but I also don't want to throw money out the window to find out that I spent 10% more for 1% extra performance.
6600k has a higher base clock than the 6600 that's why it's TDP is higher, and yes there is already headroom for overclocking without tweaking voltages. Running wow at 4k Ultra 60fps is impossible (in raids/pvp/etc) due to the CPU bottleneck out in the world alone you MIGHT be okay but during raids you're pretty screwed. ultra at 60 fps 1080P in raids is doable with some drops but you should still be fine. 500W will be fine for what you're doing now, if you get "Next gen gpus" in the future IE 1080 and anything near the 1080 you're going to need a better PSU, 1060 should be fine. For WoW every 100MHz OC you do on your cpu gives you roughly +1 minimum fps.
Dunno how portable you want it to be so i will give you another (a little bigger) solution. You also need an aftermarket cpu cooler as 6600k doesn't come with one.
