Horde What country would you want yours to be more like? *policy*

A simple question what country would you like your own country to be more like? In terms of policy and not geographical position.

Mine would be Australia and I'm from Sweden.

    Finland, from Canada.

Mainly the education system and more collectivist values.

More like any of the European nations that embrace things like national healthcare and education without screaming about socialism like the ghost of Joe McCarthy.

    Latvian here.

Minus the governance system (soft authoritarian dictatorship, economic ultra-conservatism), I would absolutely welcome my country to adopt social and fiscal convervatism of Belarus.

Or something in between Belarus and current Polish government - socially and culturally conservative, economically capitalist.

Sounds and looks nice on paper.

In reality, barely works. It's a massive bureaucratic monster that is devouring valuable resources of all kinds.

I want Japan to be more like Singapore (with the exception of stupid laws like no chewing gum) or Hong Kong and America to stop being like Europe.

Reputation is not the making or breaking of nations and countries.

Things like economic, social policies are.

Same, also a German. I've lived in Switzerland for 7 months now. I miss my homecountry in many ways, because of family and friends, and the particular German culture. I find it ridiculously weird when people try to argue that "there is no culture" "all humans are equal". Lol, even in such rather similar countries like Germany and Switzerland, you can notice TONS of difference in culture.

So while I do miss "Tatort", the hessian dialect and the german humor, I do greatly appreciate all the things at which the Swiss are simply so much better than us. Being confident, being proud of who they are and fiercely defending it, being actually super organised and clean. When people say German trains are punctual, I just LOL. No. Swiss trains are punctual. And Swiss railway stations are so perfectly clean and tidy, even the toilets .... whereas German railway stations are a sad fucking mess, with urine and garbage and thieves everywhere.

Aside from that, if I wasn't tied to Europe because of family, friends and the culture I've gotten used to, I'd probably move to New Zealand. It's my dream country, followed by Hawaii.

Japan or China. Play the long game, don't worry about the small things that happen all the time. A Confucian saying is, if you worry about next year plant rice, if you worry about the next 50 years plant trees, if you worry about the next 1,000 years build schools.

Netherlands: more public planning and structure, more ambition when it comes to construction projects.

In Belgium we are bogged down by squabbling between and within governments, by a fragmented party landscape and by small time conservatism and fake modesty.

I hate it. Our politicians derive too much of their power from the local communities, which are dominated by our inverse population pyramid. Politics here means keeping the old Christian status quo intact not to anger your massive base of active 65+ voters.

We don't progress, we delay big infrastructure projects because some old carpet merchant in some corner in some city might lose some revenue to a big chain residing in a shopping mall off the highway.
We delay big football stadium projects because some environmental lobby group objects to the fact that a small part of unused, uncultivated and untended breeding ground for weeds will have to disappear.

When I work in our Dutch offices, I'm always amazed by the efficiency of public systems and how organized the public sphere is in the major cities (and even minor ones).

Meh, I have a different experience working in our Swiss HQ in the Lake of Zürich region. I miss the experience of actually living there, which no doubt changes things a lot, but I'm not too impressed by how punctual the regional trains are, or how clean the stations are (all the small stops between Zürich HB and Thalwil for example are a bit shoddy to be honest), or how clean the cities are (Basel has some nasty districts not even that far from the city center.

I also feel like the Swiss themselves are robots without any legit sense of humor. Luckily a lot of my colleagues are Germans working in our Swiss offices. It's much easier to connect with them (especially North Germans in my opinion).

The 1 thing I'm actually impressed with in Switzerland is how safe and carefree public life is. After hours I went down to the lake and there were so many people chilling in parks, sitting on piers watching the sunset and swimming in the lake even after dark. In Belgium you'd be crazy to lounge outside like that after sundown, it's not accepted and a tad unsafe.
Also when I go running down one of the lakeside trails every single runner greets me in a kind and respectful manner. Belgians avoid eye contact when crossing each other while excercising.

Honestly I like what we have in Belgium. We are a prosperous country with strong purchasing power, despite astronomically high taxes, good health care and excellent education. Women have equal rights and are respected in society and in general Belgium is one of the more progressive political powers in the world.
But the "keep your head down" attitude of the Belgian people, the "hide behind your local church tower" attitude and the lack of ambition at every possible level of society kills me inside. It's like a cage, this country has a deeply ingrained inferiority complex built up through centuries of nodding to our Austrian, Spanish, French and Dutch overlords.

I hate it. That's what I love about the United States: they are brash, they are bold, they are ambitious. They are crazy as well at times, but it makes them interesting.
