Explosion in Rouen bar, France, kills 13

A fire in a bar in Rouen, France, has left at least 13 people dead and six injured, one seriously, according to Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

The public prosecutor says the origin of the fire at the Reunion island-themed Cuba Libre bar seems to have been accidental. According to the local press, an explosion occurred in the basement, killing and trapping several young people between the ages of 18 and 25.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.

Firefighters, called to the bar in the Normandy region at 00.50 (CET) on Saturday (August 6), managed to rescue six of those inside. A private birthday party was taking place at the time.

The bodies of those who died have been taken to a nearby hospital. Psychological assistance is being made available to the families of the victims.

An investigation is underway and local media report the police are questioning 11 witnesses.

Rescue operations were completed at 3am (CET) and the building has now been declared secure.

A fire swept through a Friday night birthday party at a bar in the Normandy city of Rouen, killing at least 13 people and injuring six others, French authorities said.

More than 50 firefighters battled the blaze at the bar in the city center, said French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

He gave an initial count of 13 dead and six injured in the fire, which started after midnight Friday.

The prefecture, which runs the region, said one of the six injured was in life-threatening condition.

A judicial inquiry has been opened to determine the cause of the blaze, Cazeneuve said in a statement.

The local Paris-Normandie newspaper said the fire ignited in the basement of the Cuba Libre bar, which was rented for the evening for the birthday celebration.

The paper, without citing sources, said the ceiling quickly ignited when candles were lit. The ceiling was covered in special isolation material against sound.

The paper quoted the deputy prosecutor present at the site as denying initial reports of an explosion. Laurent Labadie was quoted as saying that the noise reported by neighbors would have been the sound of windows exploding from the heat.

The neighborhood was blocked off, and Rouen Mayor Yvon Robert was on the scene.

A tense France is on maximum terror alert after two attacks last month, the latest the killing of a priest in his church outside Rouen. The funeral Mass was held at the Rouen cathedral on Tuesday.

Title is a teense bit misleading.

An unfortunate accident to be sure, as it seems.

But the real question for this thread on this site is... how many people won't read the OP and will blame brown people?

It was the cake candles that made the roof go up in fire, apparently the roof was made up from plastic material so much dangerous smoke and shit.

You're right. In my defense I reported straight from Euronews, that's poor journalism there.
Rouen is a little city, a catastrophe like this after what they went through already must be devastating.
