The thing is, none of the real aspects of UFC have anything to do with its popularity. If MMA was marketed as a highly technical sport contested between disciplined, respectful, and sane competitors, nobody would watch it. It only really took off when they turned the whole thing into a massive reality show and gave free rein to the fighters to be delusional, unhinged lunatics, essentially making it more like pro wrestling.

A bit like an actual high jumper would "mop the floor" with someone whose idea of "being athletic" is going to the gym. Or, a bit like a Formula 1 driver would "mop the floor" in a race in F1 cars with someone who's driven only a Prius up until that point.

Right. But then again, let's take Brock Lesnar, who is a bit bigger than Cena but about his size, and let's throw him against McGregor. Now we've got a trained fighter against a trained fighter. Now McGregor won't leave the octagon alive.
    make sense lel.

You have to admit, a street fight between McGregor and some WWE guys(Cena being one of them) would be a fun PPV to watch.
I'll see your McGregor and raise you a Brock Lesnar.......

Seriously though... he is sounding more and more like a whiny little bitch who cant handle having his ass handed to him by a better man

I think McGregor needs to worry a bit more about Diaz than the WWE. Diaz will have a full camp behind him this time and not just called in from vacation on 11 days notice like last time.

Sounds like a setup for Connor to get some of that WWE money.

There are different shades of "fake".
Its kind of like when people say porn is fake compared to others that arn't, last I checked, regardless of how the scene is shot, the sex in a porn scene when you see things going in is real, its just that its shot in such a way that it skips, so its not as straightforward as real sex, but its still shoving something in another orifice.

On the subject of Cena, I don't watch WWE and never gotten into it, but from what I heard he's a nice enough guy irl, so don't really care otherwise.

This is akin to Conor walking into a gym and talking shit to a bunch of body builders just because when he stands next to them he looks like a toothpick. They call it little man syndrome. Even a wrestler/fighter like Ken Shamrock, who was relatively small in the WWE, would make Conor look like a twig. Obviously this is just generating interest in his fight, but still...if he had any balls he'd talk shit on people that actually practice his medium like... oh I don't know... Nate Diaz or something.

    And this too.
We're not talking friendly sparring here. He's talking about beating the shit out of people- athletes, regardless of the bullshit haters in this thread- in which the smallest among them, outweigh him by nearly 40 pounds. Like I said, put him against Dolph Ziggler, or Kurt Angle for that matter, and see how well he fares. They would most likely hurt him.

Some of you marks are getting worked so fucking hard it's not even funny. You should know the moment he sucked up to the WWE management. By calling the locker room pussies he basically planted seeds for his WWE run. He's done in MMA if he won't beat Diaz. This is literally pro wrestling 101.
Also for all of you idiots unironically thinking that wrestlers are just actors and not "real athletes" because they don't fight 3 times per year in grand total of 10 minutes: go watch Japanese wrestling.

It's part of evolution of what prowrestling is. It started out as a Carnival scam, with a face being placed in the audience and a Goliath heel. Then moved onto being more of a spectacle match, where the fact it was predetermined was hidden. Even into the 80s you could see it's carnival roots, with guys like Andre the Giant being a carnival oddity. By the time 80s rolled around, the fact that its predetermined was open to just about everyone, who wasn't a promoter. Vince combined the two, still ignoring it being predetermined, but now having oddity defined by character. He created immortals, galactic warriors and undead wizards, but still ignored it being predetermined, as in keeping "Keyfeb".

During the mid to late 90s, the competition and promoter gimmick ownership, butted heads with wrestlers jumping between promotions, while redefining their gimmicks. This was the end of Keyfeb, or pretending it's not predetermined, which instead shed the light on the very bizarre lockeroom of prowrestling. Which in turn made "realistic" or soap stories defind the attitude/Monday night wars/ruthless aggression eras. It was more soap, than wrestling. Because wrestling locker rooms are the drama heaven...

Right now prowrestling is going into a new era, which fans dubbed the "new new era", due to its sloppy execution. The focus is now more on skills in the ring. Everyone is aware of what botches are. Doing spectacular moves is no longer enouph, unless you do them right. Everyone has accepted wrestling is not a sport, as WWE changed its tax listing in NY from a sporting entity, to an entertainment one. They are saag membership away from being as much a sport, as dancing with the stars.

But, I think prowrestling is moving closer to being a sport, than it ever has. The thing is, it's not as a combat sport. The way wrestling seems to be headed now, is closer to a rating based sport, like gymnastics or synchronized swimming. People are now leaning more on a face being someone who executes their match perfectly, while a heel is one that fails to do so. A sure fire way to get heat now a day, is to botch and screw up during matches. Eva Marrie is now even a character, who is being marketed as a heel, due to her being terrible in the ring. They intentionally have her screw up and quit matches, to get a rise from fans. Even though it wasn't originally intended...

In short... Get ready for fans to start bring signs with 1 through 10... Then rating each much on performance...
