Did the change to melee not make them a good choice anymore... or they just not good during pre patch? They fun/not fun? Perform good/bad ?

They are missing their Artifact first ability and several traits that make them actually work properly.
Most hunter mains I've spoken to are disregarding Survival because it's a melee spec and they either prefer playing ranged or their raid already has more than enough melee players. I also picked a Hunter because I wanted a Ranged DPS that wasn't a traditional caster, so I have very little interest in Survival now, I prefer playing my Paladin when I want to melee.
Survival might make some players that haven't played hunters before check it out, but I'm confident that Survival will be the least played Hunter spec statistically in Legion. Maybe that will make Blizzard change it again for the next expansion. Given how many Melee specs we have already, and that the last 3 classes to be released all are melee classes I think the Survival change is odd to begin with.
Might play survival if the single target dps is on par as the others because we already have 4 hunters playing mm or bm.
I think they just combined a lot of stuff that people have been asking for since the beginning of world of warcraft. I mean it makes sense since it gets the hype going, but I wonder how it will turn out.
I mean WoD was pretty hyped.
Demon hunters, mechanical pets for hunters, melee hunters, dark ranger hunter(I think some changes did make MM lose the dark ranger feel it had at the start of beta but I'm not sure.) And you can continue that list with both the new lore and class changes.
They are melee and dont provide anything another class such as rogue does not!
As has already been mentioned, someone who chose hunter as a main didn't want to play a melee spec. It's great to have the option, though.
As others have already stated, survival is melee and many people play hunter because they want to play ranged class that isn't a clothie. For me there are now only two hunter specs, I have so many other characters if I want to play melee.
From a PVP standpoint, being the only spec with traps still makes them hell on wheels for controlling the enemy. They make good skirmishers. I feel the only thing their lacking is a good way to clear slows so they can eject from a bad fight or engage, something it feels like they were designed around doing but functionally cannot. DPS seems decent to me, I'm finding a lack of dedicated burst even when dumping mongoose bites with Eagle and Snakehunter, but then again, it's hard to tell how succesful you are at damaging something when healers are so powerful in the prepatch.
Loving my Survival Hunter in BGs. I feel like I get crushed in both ranged specs.
SV needs some crazy utility to have spots in a raid. Rogue has cloak n stuff and DK has their utility.
If traps become really important then maybe. But even if a fight really needs SV then the MM/BM hunters would just switch for that fight only
In pvp BM is just better so no reason to play SV there. But i might be wrong here.
Maybe they make the raids way more melee-friendly but even then SV will have as much spots as feral/ww
But i dont think sv going melee is a bad thing, maybe in future expansions having a class that can switch between ranged and melee with the same gear will become a major advantage ( in legion it will be kinda hard becuz artifacts)

That's.... what? How the hell can you construct an argument like that?
"Oh, people who chose to drive a Pinto signed up to explode."
"But that issue wasn't discovered until the car had already been available for a while after initial run."
"Yeah, notice how I used the past form, someone who "chose" a Pinto. They obviously didn't want to explode later when the option was available."
