'Clinton Hacker' Guccifer Sentenced to 52 Months in Jail

The hacker known as Guccifer - but better known for exposing Hillary Clinton's private email server - was sentenced today by a U.S. court to four years and four months in jail.

Federal District Court Judge James Cacheris passed down the sentencing in Alexandria, Virginia, on Thursday morning.

Guccifer, aka 44-year-old Romanian cab driver Marcel Lazar, had been extradited from his homeland in March to face a U.S. grand jury. Lazar pleaded guilty earlier this year to two of the nine charges — aggravated identity theft and unauthorized access to a protected computer. Today's sentences of 24 months and 28 months for those charges are to be served consecutively.

The charges stem from what the U.S. government described as a "computer hacking spree" during 2012-2014 that included targets such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Sidney Blumenthal, a former Clinton aide.

In total, Lazar breached the email and social media accounts of over 100 Americans and made much of those findings public, revealing the clintonemail.com domain name - which ultimately led to an FBI investigation into Clinton's handling of classified information.

The Romanian hacker first rose to prominence in the U.S. after he hacked into email accounts belonging to George W. Bush and made public some of the former president's own paintings, including bath-time self-portraits.

Because of his AOL-heavy cyberattacks, Lazar was sentenced in Virginia, where internet service provider AOL is based.

Following his four years in U.S. jail, Lazar must still complete a seven-year sentence in Romania.
    AOL is still around? LOL

And had he hacked Trump he wouldnt have spent a single day in prison. In fact, he probably wouldve been awarded a spot on Obama's Cybersecurity team. This is a travesty of justice

I know you guys like to pretend there is a conspiracy against Trump, but if they hacked Trump or someone committed an illegal act against Trump they would still face jail time.

He's obviously not Guccifer, given that Guccifer2 is still out there.

He's a scapegoat they desperately want to pin it on to appear effective.

The Guccifer2 hack was way more technically complex than the Guccifer1 hack, which implies that at best - they caught a lackey of Guccifer2, and at worst - they caught someone barely related at all and are throwing him against the wall.

Edit: For better clarity, a hack like this is usually the work of a group of hackers, not a lone individual. I'm not saying that the guy being charged for Guccifer1 isn't part of the group, he likely is related - but given that Guccifer2 was a more impressive hack - the talent in the group is clearly still at large. This is akin to catching a henchman and charging him as a mob boss, while the mob boss is still having rigatoni down at the local Italian restaurant. You aren't cleaning up the streets, and are likely inviting more attacks in retaliation.

Poor Taxi driver, smart enough to hack an email account, not smart enough to not be a Taxi Driver.
