Where has Deathwing really been [Spoilers]

So I just finished the series of quests where the PC escorts Mayla Highmountain and Ebornhorn through Neltharion's Lair in Highmountain and they receive 3 visions. The visions were said to be just after the war of the ancients as "for Huln the War of the Ancients did not end with the Well of Eternity" so we see him go into Deathwing's lair and claim the hammer of khaz'goroth and then... he uses it to banish Deathwing to Deepholm.

Now, I'm not done with Highmountain yet but this has me scratching my head because as far as I knew Deathwing was around in 2nd war and in fact according to WoWpedia "After a series of setbacks, culminating in his defeat at the hands of the other Aspects, Deathwing retreated to the elemental plane of Deepholm to recuperate." during the 2nd War. So what the hell is really going on with Deathwing I assumed that once Deathwing first entered Deepholm that he didn't leave again until the start of Cataclysm, however, the Highmountain storyline suggests that Deathwing got his plates put on by the Drogbar slaves and then was banished later by Huln which would've been about 10,000 years ago just after the WoA. So if this was the case how the hell was he in the 2nd war?

I am leaning toward "small" oversight on Blizzard's end. Guess we could say that Neltharion/deathwing simply built an important base there and so constantly went back and forth between Deepholm and Azeroth since then, but that would imply that the maelstrom was a portal since it came to be.

But then why would he need to hide Black Dragon eggs in Outland if he had a secure base in Deepholm?

While you're there ask them about class balance and why we really need to wait until a new xpac for broken classes/specs to be addressed.

Deathwing was about Azeroth/Draenor during the Second War. After the Second War, he was in the guise of Daval Prestor messing with the Alliance. Probably found a way in and out of Deepholm.

I believe the Drogbar put on the first set of plates, if my memory is correct he went through at least two applications of the plates. First time was after the Old Gods blasted him for trying to take the Dragon Soul over the Well of Eternity. Using it was basically ripping him apart, and that little stunt really f'ed him up. Second time was during the Second War when he went to Outland. Hell might have even been a third time since the plates got shrunk I think it was while he was fighting Gruul in Outland by... I want to say Khadgar or Rhonin. Yeah, going to say three plate applications. First during War of the Ancients, second time after being blasted by Old Gods then banished to Deepholm. Third time for Cataclysm, all new super powerful elementium plates! I may be wrong feel free to correct me.

From the info in Highmountain it seems that the Goblins engineering the plates, and the Drogbar did the brute-force labor of riveting them to Deathwing's frame. The first set of plates were of Adamantium, and the second of Elementium acquired in Deepholm. Khadgar was the one who damaged the Adamantium set and forced Deathwing's withdrawal from Outland, and probably led him back to Deepholm for repairs and upgrades. Not sure on a third set, the first was required because the Demon Soul was tearing him apart and converting him into magma, apparently.

Deathwing is the red-headed stepchild of Blizzard's lore department.

The well of eternity dungeon shows that deathwing had his plates during that whole ordeal

If anything, the new info fixed the mess left with Cataclysm, why he was in Deepholm in the first place.

As an Earth Warden, he most likely found a way out of Deepholm before he helped the Horde during the Second War.

Theradras (IIRC) even says that he would frequently come to Deepholm to recuperate before returning to Azeroth.

That would make sense if it is the case, though I have to say it makes the banishment seem pretty pointless. One would think that when you banish something its done in such a way so that the thing being banished can never return.

Not necessarily; all it really means is sending them there. Return may be difficult or impossible for other reasons (such as a way back not existing), but it doesn't imply permanence.

It's also possible that this was the first time Deathwing was banished to Deepholm, and that being there is ultimately how he learned to travel regularly between there and Azeroth.

Yeah I'm quite sure that Deepholm just gave him some new ideas to pursue. And there's a 10.000 year period between the war of the ancients and the second war so there was plenty of time to learn how to get out of there.
