YouTube announced yesterday this new community service/feature/program


For too long we've been bombarded with terrible comments and content endorsing genocide and terrorism, doxing and stalking, or worse, misgendering people.
The old saying "don't read the comments" might come to an end, as they crowdsource sanitation. These janitors, now re-branded "heroes", as the video comments, work hard to make YouTube better for everyone. It's now time they reward them with points; and they'll also have the privilege of extra work as beta-testers.
I think it's an excellent way for, otherwise unemployable, reddit mods to broaden their horizons, diversify their labor, and earn even more points than they already do.
They even have this incredible tiered system of perks; the maximum recompense, it appears, is being able to apply to the Heroes Summit, and it includes the interesting feature of job-training for this very task in the second tier.

The comments on the video are closed. To avoid undesirable feedback, I imagine; or any feedback at all. And it's amassed a promising 641 likes so far.


Now, I know what some of you are thinking: this is exploitable, and it'll benefit this or that group to power-trip. Maybe throw a dash of freeze peach, or perhaps a reminder that they're making it more palatable to advertisers (or bland, depending on your perspective).
I'm personally unconcerned about all that, really. But I know mmoc has strong opinions on these subjects, and I'm interested about it anyway, folks.

I actually think it bodes well with some aspects of YouTube's community: specifically the "we made this" mentality YouTubers often espouse.
The presentation feeds into self-righteous mentalities by branding them heroes. And that's just hilarious. Because all heroes deserve a little glory.

Yeah... I think the comment section stopped being YouTube's biggest problem when they started going all Gestapo on people who use copyrighted material in their videos under the Fair Use doctrine, and then finally when they decided to publicize how they're shafting creators who say shit and fuck on their videos by taking away their money.

Also, loving the (dis)likes on this video. Great job YouTube. Really have a finger on the pulse of people.

youtube heroes sounds like the cringeyest thing ive ever heard, instead of focusing on new features maybe they should focus on removing porn and hacking videos off there site instead of flagging peoples videos and removing them for just saying fuck, i mean youtube heroes just screams we want youtube to be PG

Yeah, this is going to end so well, if twitter, reddit and facebook can't work out people mass flagging and getting people banned for wrong think, youtube letting people actually be moderators and give them points for doing exactly that is so fucking stupid that i am flabbergasted.

I mean, it sounds like on paper, but I'm not sure anyone can fix Youtube's comment sections, and I pity the person who signs up for it with their actual name as their account name, although I would imagine any moderation would be left as anonymous.


Also, heroes? They couldn't of picked something better as a name?
