Would you be willing to be the first person to go to Mars if

Would you be willing to volunteer as a candidate to be one of the first people sent to Mars to start a colony?

Elon Musk laid out the realistic plots - fatality will initially be high and if you are prepared to die, have little to lose, and fit the test, you can literally be a candidate.

Mars is even more empty than the 99,999% of earth I haven't seen. If my explorer urge peaks it may already be satisfied if I take a walk...

    Oh yeah of course.

Probably not. And not because of the risks, but because I would probably go crazy without my normal leisure activity (gaming).

I wanna say yes, but honestly it's just going to be a struggle to survive and if I managed to not die prematurely we still wouldn't accomplish anything up there that would make it more liveable in my lifespan. If danger of death and struggle wasn't so prevalent I might say yes though.

It's valuable in the long run, but once the novelty wore off I think it'd be a pretty shitty life. Luckily for me there's others out there willing to give their life for science.

Given my age and health, it ain't an option. If it were? Sure. I grew up reading science fiction and watching the space race, I'd get to be one of the first people to actually leave the planet and try to move us along that path.
With COVID-19 making its impact on our lives, I have decided that I shall hang in there for my remaining days, skip some meals, try to get children to experiment with making henna patterns on their skin, and plant some trees. You know -- live, fast, dye young, and leave a pretty copse. I feel like I may not have that quite right.

The only reason I'd go to Mars is to say "My life was worth 10 billion dollars at one point". But, there's really no reason to go to Mars, it's just earth like. Maybe if there were some cool creatures I could research, but I'm not interested in researching anything that's either A. Not cute B. Smaller than a rat. Mars probably has neither.

The radiation on the surface of Mars is over what they allow people who work with radioactive materials to undergo in a year.

Tob e fair there are regions on Earth where those limits are exceeded, too, and people who lived there their whole life are just as healthy as in other places.

Most people however aren't used to that and would have severe problems.
Also, there is a reason why the Mars has no atmosphere anymore: No magnetic field/shield to protect it against radiation.

Even that i lived the past 6 years of my life being socialy excluded (the freaking crisis and my long term unemployment caused it), i don't think i would stand it again, i need people around me, so i wouldn't apply for that. As someone here in this thread claimed, i would go crazy, i almost went last time.

If I didn't have my wife and kids I'd seriously consider it yeah.

Fuck no. I've watched enough space movies to know how shitty it can get, and I would have no access to my hobbies, family, animals...

No, I have a great life here.

Let some people with nothing to lose go instead

Mars doesn't have things that aren't cute and smaller than a rat?
Probably. But I only want to research cute or large creatures. Idgaf about insects or microbes of Mars; If I'm on the planet that is

Well my life sucks as it is so why not die on a desolate planet in my spacesuit when the freeze dried ramen noodles runs out!

Eh, why not, it'd be interesting to see how long we can hold our shit together before dying horribly. Kinda like a real life Dwarf Fortress.

Eh, I don't have the qualification to do that. You need to be pretty proficient in engineering and such to actually be of use there. If I did have it, then... probably still no. I enjoy living on Earth!

Or agriculture, I'd go be a martian farmer.

Honestly the first people are going to have to do everything.
