    [TV] Westworld

I caught the trailer on some random top 10 most anticipated shows for october ranked at no.1 and yet ive heard nothing about this.

The cast is freaking stellar for a start with an all star line up headlined by Anthony Hopkins and Ed harris.
Its a HBO show so expect big budget/sex mashup
Its based on a Michael Crition novel and just like Jurassic Park its a futuristic theme park gone wrong.
Its a mix of scifi/western which is a great compelling settting.

This looks freaking awsome and im shocked it hasnt had a thread dedicated to it on here already.

I loved the old Westworld movie, I wonder how this would transition into a TV series? Will probably give it a watch though as I loved the whole premise.

I'm interested in watching it. Never watched the movie, should I?

Been looking forward to this show since it was supposed to come out in 2015. It's going to be a mindfuck with so much murdering and sex going on.

    My body is ready.

Someone mentioned it in another thread a week or two ago, I looked up the premise, saw the cast and immediately set it to record.

Just watched the first episode. Man, that was trippy. I love the cinematography; I wonder where it was filmed. The whole thing kind of has a Jurassic Park meets I Robot vibe. The one scene where AnthonyHopkin's character is questioning the Android who plays Delores's father and it starts quoting Shakespeare is both freaky and intense. I am definitely going to be watching this going forward.

True, but it is a pilot. They'll probably want to see how the first season fares before dumping more money into Westworld.

And as a counter-argument you could say that there are many scenes in GoT that look cheap, despite it being their biggest hit. (Daenerys riding on Drogon for example)

    Looked amazing!

The pilot was directed by Jonathan Nolan, and he has also directed the season finale, the 10th episode. The whole show was adapted, developed and mostly written by him and Lisa Joy. Jonathan Nolan, obviously, is the brother of Christopher Nolan, and the co-writer of the Batman movies, Interstellar, and the writer of the short story on which Memento was based. And, most importantly to me, he's the creator of Person of Interest. Incidentally, the original score of the show is by Ramin Djawadi, who made the amazing music to Person of Interest. And, of course, Game of Thrones.

A bit of a minor spoiler having to do with the music in the pilot so I'll tag...

I loved the music in the pilot. The pianola playing Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden was so weird and delightful, and the orchestral version of Paint It Black by the Stones was amazing. Wonder if there was some kind of a theme with the music? Both of those songs had to do with black anyway, but it might be mainly because black hats are typically the bad guys in westerns.

Agreed with the music. The player piano playing contemporary 90s music like Black Hole Sun, underlines the whole premise of the theme park/show itself. Something modern and contemporary, but at the same time fuckin' with the anachronism of it being set in the old west. Much like the park. Also mimics the themes of the show, the old and new mixing together and while it sounds right, there's something underneath that just isn't.

I also like the fact that the show begins with the viewer being absolutely clear that this happens in some distant future, and that the Westworld itself is actually, indeed, a kind of a theme park, instead of the typical "and then they realized they weren't actually living in the real world", a "Matrix" -type of a reveal, which would've felt a bit overdone in my view. Especially if one had watched the teasers which obviously made as much clear anyway.

J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan, Ramin Djawadi, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris... I'm not superstitious so I'm not "jinxing" anything when I say this show can't possibly fail. The early reviewers put the entire season at around 8/10 and I believe the pilot was rated at over 9. Still, I suppose anything can happen. Quite hopeful for it though.

What music played at 46:31? Was that The Rolling Stones - Paint it, Black? If so, better than original, and I fucking need that version

The song in question played around the time that Hector Escaton's posse rolled into town and started gunning everyone down. I'm not sure about the exact time. Probably around what you said.

Alright, this has always driven me absolutely nuts, because we've been over this again and again: we don't need to do the spoiler tags on episodes that have already been released. It's been aired, guys. If you're reading this thread, it's to discuss the show and the last episode. If you come here, and see "spoilers" for an episode that aired last night, well...what did you expect? That's kind of your own fault.

The only time you need to spoiler tag stuff is if you've seen an episode that hasn't aired yet but you've somehow already seen, or its a show based on a book (like GoT) and you'd discussing future plot threads that are definitely, probably coming that the show hasn't covered yet.

Pretty good pilot, curious to see where things will go from here. However, my main concern is how they are going to stretch the plot to 5 seasons, since it seems like it could easily be an one season show if it was so inclined.

Excellent pilot episode. Great performances, production design, and cinematography. Very interesting score too, incorporating period-appropriate instrumental renditions of modern rock tunes, which contributes to the strangely disconcerting, anachronistic atmosphere.

Not much else to say other than that I'm looking forward to episode 2. I'll probably rewatch the original movie some time this week, since I've only ever seen bits and pieces on television.
