I had a pretty shit time at school and had shoddy grades after missing nearly two years (Year 10 + 11) with a complicated case of Kawasaki Disease. I had recovered in May when GCSEs were taking place. I managed to get 3 C's in the core subjects (Maths, English and Science) after my parents got me a home tutor.

I went in for the last few days and was invited to the end of year party. I met my first girlfriend there who was also in a bad place at the time. Turns out, we were really good for each other. I managed to turn my education around in College and finished with 3 decent enough A-Levels in my chosen subjects. The relationship lasted for three years and I was a changed man by the end of it.

I look back and think so much could be different if I hadn't met her. The way the stars lined up...it was almost like it was fate.

I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when I was 8... and I've had it for 20 years. No cure... it's caused by an autoimmune disorder. I would say being dependent on insulin and micromanaging my blood glucose levels is pretty life changing. My sister was born a few months later... that was also life changing, and a very bad year for me :P My entire world turned upside down.

My best friend tried to take his own life: I remember hearing the news so vividly still from his mum. I was at uni at the time in 2008, and was on a night out with my girlfriend at the time, called the 'big one' (one of those stupid student nights where they sell you tshirts for the privilege of going to the normal student bars as if it was something special) and I was sat behind some crappy club in Manchester having a cigarette. I remember getting a text then of course I rang and he'd been sectioned under the mental health act; it brought my stupid, selfish hedonism down to Earth with a bang. However I ended up splitting up from my girlfriend over the whole thing because she didn't like me visiting him in the hospital all the time - I guess events like that show us who are real meaningful relationships are with.
