Turtle Rock Studios announced today is the final day it will support Evolve, its competitive, multi-player shooter.
"It’s always hard to leave one of our games behind," Turtle Rock said in a post on its official forums, mentioning the same sense of melancholy permeated the studio as when it ended support of Left4Dead, "but now it's Evolves turn."
In July, Evolve on PC switched to Evolve Stage 2, making the game free-to-play. As a result, the Evolve player count rose to 1 million within a week of the switch.Loved the concept and the f2p change did some good. But Evolve is the perfect example of how to not handle this type of game or really any game.Turtle Rock said there was a lot it had hoped to do with the game, including introducing Evolve Stage 2 to consoles, but "it looks like that’s just not meant to be."
Turtle Rock also pointed out the end of support for Evolve isn't its decision, but rather part and parcel of being a triple-A developer who isn't "self-funded" and doesn't own its IP.
"We don’t get to make the call," it said.
After thanking THQ, who "initially believed in" the studio when it was small, and thanking 2K for "picking up the mantle out of THQ’s bankruptcy," Turtle Rock Studios took the chance to thank its fans.
"Thank you all for your feedback, your support and your dedication."
R.I.P Evolve.
