Hence, industrialized economies were able to obtain cheap raw materials while selling finished goods at whatever prices they wanted to charge which allowed workers to take home a decent wage on occasion. There's no going back to that gravy train - unless our workers' greater productivity justifies a much higher wage than outsourced labor, there's no way we can keep our exports competitive enough to actually bring jobs back home.
    I posted this earlier:
This is an interesting paper (it's still on work) that explores the actual effects of NAFTA over the rust belt. It seems that NAFTA is being used as an scapegoat this time.

Summary of the paper: the rust belt died because it failed to innovate, which is required to sustain growth. Companies didn't innovate due to unions and lack of competition. On the labor side, companies must spend money to innovate up front, but the powerful union would capture enough of the gains to make it unprofitable. On the output side, lack of competition meant the companies didn't have to innovate to maintain its market share. With reasonable parameter values, the model captures about 2/3 of the decline in manufacturing along with the feature of the slow decline.
Doesn't really surprise anyone and if it does get published it will just confirm priors.

This is actually interesting, and may be a result of our education system. We cannot teach creation, or innovation. They occur in environments that allow it, but most education institutions snuff out innovation, and this has happened in businesses as well. Imagination is also snuffed out of young people in favor of certain ideologies. It's interesting, and the problem may be deeper that what appears on the surface.

this election has played out over and over again already in red states. the repub candidate appeals to religion and hatred, then quietly screws over the working class while blaming liberals giving all the money to minorities.

the dems mistake was not in not trying to appeal to these voters. it was alienating people who supported bernie, cooling their base toward them, and pushing an uncharismatic candidate.

Well then I reckon it's up to us Stonecloak to be sand in the gears, because this is a machine that I think any reasonably minded person should work to shut down. I mean I did think long and hard about writing a gloat post and mailing a rather sharp response to a couple mods who've by my estimates been very unfair to Conservatives over the years, while giving a complete pass to the other side. After eight years of such assaults, I won't deny I was tempted to drop to that level..

But I think I'll take a higher road, and confine myself from here on to Issues, not insults. Sure I got the election result I wanted, but that doesn't mean I should be rotten to someone like say Espe or Themis because they say X or Y. That isn't going to solve anything at this point, only create further issues and problems for everyone.

What sort of remedial civics? Does this tie to education reform in any way?

    Edit:

I agree with you to an extent. I think his lack of knowledge can be quickly replaced with help understanding such matters. But you are right on the fact that he is definitely going to need help in understanding these concepts. I'm hoping he draws in people from the Democrat Party, as well as the Republican Party to coalesce some sort of unity Government that pools everyone's experiences and talents.

One thing I liked about Trump was how he said he would bring in the best people in the business for assistance. If he does this with Politicians also, we might see a real meeting of minds which we've needed for a long time.

Truthfully the thing that really always turned me off with Obama, and which I was pleased to see a reversal on was the concept that he had a pen and a phone, and to hell with what the other party said or wanted. He was going to do X. That felt like disenfranchising 1/2 of the Country who wasn't sold on him even before his election.

I guess all I can say is watch and wait on that. I don't have the DeLorean, so I can't tell the future. I do however feel like with how Hillary and Obama spoke, as did Trump.. maybe we'll get through all of this together yet.

It is ironic, but I think (correct me if wrong) didn't Monica Lewinsky try to start a similar campaign several years back called #HereweGo or something? I mean I think most would agree, CyberBullying is becoming a serious issue with how the Internet exploded the last 20 years. I'm prolly one of the last generations coming up who remembers what it was like before it existed.

I dunno, I just feel like when someone says "Go kill yourself" to some teenager and they go out and do so, there should be some kind of consequences and right now it's too easy for such people to hide behind a smoke-screen of anonymity and do whatever the heck they want to.

It's just hard for a lot of the white working class to accept that what they believed to be normal was actually just a temporary and unsustainable period of prosperity where every level of government pretty much pulled out all the stops to make sure that they were well taken care of, until it was simply no longer feasible in the face of mounting competition from third world labor. Our global reach and influence is proportionally much less than it was during the post war period, so we couldn't go back to the glory days no matter how hard we tried, if the working class wants to better their lot it's up to them to make it happen now.

Ultimately it's because we teach people that just by virtue of being American, the belong to some kind of special group and hence are entitled to all sorts of opportunities in life that aren't available anywhere else. Not only is this a terrible message to send to young people, it's also becoming increasingly untrue, as our complacency slowly erodes every advantage we once enjoyed.

I think Democrats made two mistakes: first, they underestimated Trump, thinking he would lose to, pretty much, any candidate - and, following from it, second, they nominated Hillary, while polls showed that Bernie would absolutely crush Trump, while with Hillary it wasn't so certain.

That's good. If Bernie runs next time, right when Trump's actions start seriously frustrating the population, he will destroy this guy, and, while I do not exactly spprove of his minor populism, I think the country might get back on track.

    Oh the irony...
Trump runs on a platform of being appalled at Hillary's connections to wall street and banks. His backers even pointed it out all the time. Now you guys are playing dumb and going BUH BUH BUH HILLARY!!!!!!!! in response to Trump selling positions on his cabinet. How utterly predictable. 6 months from now when Hillary is in the past, and Trump has sold everyone out, what is the excuse going to be then?

Holy shit who are you and what did you do with The Penguin?

First thing Trump and the Republicans need to do is reach across the aisle, the partisan bullshit is poison and it needs to stop.
Half the country is utterly terrified and lost. They are scared what this means for them, and I don't know if any election previously has terrified half the country as much as this one. If they are minorities (whether they are so because of their skin color, religion, or sexuality) they are afraid they will be attacked, and there are already issues popping up where Trump supporters are terrorizing people. Trump needs to reign them in and try to get the healing process going.

People are scared that the ACA will be gutted and they will be left without insurance and many people with preexisting conditions are dependent on the ACA to be able to afford or even get coverage, Trump and Congress will need to put a plan together and have it ready to go if they go through with repealing the ACA. I lost my job this year and despite my best efforts I haven't been fortunate enough to find employment yet, and if it wasn't for the ACA I wouldn't have access to the meds I need to live. To be honest I'm terrified what this means for me and other people like me.

In the US at least, (for reasonable feminists who aren't part of the loud, extreme fringe) the battle at this point isn't so much about rights as it is perceptions. Let me give you two examples of what I mean:

-There was a Super Bowl commercial a couple of years ago, in which young girls were asked to "kick like a girl," and they put their all into it. When teenage girls were asked the same thing, they made their attempts look weak and feeble. Obviously men have a higher strength ceiling, but feminists would like to combat the idea that doing something "like a girl" is to do it weakly. The phrase also carries the implication of the traditional expectation that girls are supposed to be delicate, not "tough."

-My wife is in school to become a dentist, and perhaps an oral surgeon, but when she tells people that she is in Dental School, the most common response is "oh, to be an assistant?" The likelihood that she would be getting asked that if she was a man is slim to none. There is still a cultural assumption/expectation that men are in higher positions of power and prestige. While it is true that men hold more of those positions, the feminist perspective to say that maybe girls shouldn't grow up with the expectation that men will be the bosses.

This is part of why the glass ceiling is important to many women.

    @The Penguin

I'm exhausted, my wife wants some cuddle time so I have to bow out, but you're right, It's worth it, and I've noticed some gears unhinging, only to lock back into place again, but it'll happen again, eventually. As for education I think it's a big underlining issue. One most people probably wouldn't notice, because a society that isn't open to outside ideas is an insecure society, and I think we have a very insecure society when it comes to certain ideas. Anyways just a thought, but goodnight. Glad there's more of you out there.
