Body camera shows shoplifting woman resisting arrest. Creates controversy.

The incident occurred earlier this month in Wesley Chapel as deputies responded to a shoplifting call, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, which posted the video to their Facebook page Friday.

"While making contact with the suspect, our deputy attempted to take the suspect into custody by first giving verbal commands with which she did not comply," the Sheriff's Office post read.

The video showed the deputy attempting to put handcuffs on the woman as she struggles and moves away.

Eventually, the woman is taken to the ground by the deputy and appears to strike her head on the pavement.

As the woman attempts to get up, she is pushed back to the ground face first, the video showed. Blood can be seen on the ground as the woman again turns to face the deputy and sits up.

The deputy then pulls out what appears to be a Taser and asks the woman to get on her stomach, but she continues to plead with him to let her go.

Eventually she complies with the deputy's orders and is handcuffed.

The woman was finally taken into custody about 2 minutes after deputies first attempted to arrest her.

"This entire incident could have been avoided had the suspect not stolen the product or had complied with the initial commands by the deputy," the Sheriff's Office stated.

The suspected shoplifter had a "lengthy" criminal record, according the Sheriff's Office's Facebook post, which received numerous comments in favor of the deputies actions.
So apparently this video is creating controversy because she got hurt when she was resisting arrest. If she either 1. had not even stolen the shoes to begin with, 2. not resisted arrest then the injury wouldn't have happened. She got hurt because she was twisting and turning while the cops were trying to take her to the ground. She made it happen and the police department is getting flak about it.

Either way, I think they were extremely patient with her.
I think her head hit the pavement while she was struggling.

Don't want to get beat up by the police? Don't resist arrest.

You can't fight the police. They will always win.

Not sure what the controversy could be, here, outside of the usual "b-b-but police brutality!!" crowd.

He should have tazed her. After she was done pissing herself from the pain, she would have been as silent as an oak.

I don't see any point where the officer did anything wrong. She appeared to hit her head against the column when she was trying to spin out of the arm grab while pleading with the officer. That's entirely on her.

If anything he should be applauded for his patience. It would've been so easy to shut her up with the taser instead of still trying to reason with her even after resisting arrest. It's probably what I would've done in his place.

People yell for body cameras, and then choose to interpret the footage in such a way as to always blame the police.
Unfortunately body cams won't fix stupid.
Those who hate the police will always do so.

It's not bad enough to sustain any police brutality allegations, but it was pretty poorly executed. You really don't want to resort to slamming people around when they're passively resisting like that. If you do mental health work, or club security, or even corrections, that's a big issue.

So you want officers to be careful and gentle with potentially dangerous criminals

By openly resisting arrest, you forfeit your chance for officers to be gentle with you.

Passive? The only things she didn't do was hit him or run. She was making a concerted effort to make it difficult for the officer to put the cuffs on her.

i bet a lot of american police would love to work in other countries where the media wasn't constantly shaming and running a hate campaign against them also where armed criminals are 99% less likely to occur as well.

I see no controversy here...she resisted a rightful arrest, and got hurt mostly by her own damned fault. These anti-police nuts need to just...shut up.

Well, you don't want the opposite either, which is kinda the case a lot of places over here (Denmark) were police feel entitled enough to outright ignore certain crimes... I mean sure, they might respond at some point, but you know they ain't going to do jack shit about it at all.

Granted, this is far, faaar from the US, different cultures and not near as many hardcore crimes going down etc...

Doesn't exist. Unless you only defined 'armed' as 'carrying a firearm'.
