I don't view each state as a ranking of who is more important to the "world". Last I checked we are voting on a US election, not a who's better for the world election. The citizens of each state of this country are equally important as any other. Just because California is loaded to the brim with liberals doesn't mean that they should dictate the beliefs of the rest of the country.

Besides, so what if the 5th largest economy went blue, Texas, AZ and Florida went red, therefore wiping out your vote. So while the democrats have clearly owned California for the longest time, that doesn't mean the combined votes from other states shouldn't matter.
