Donald Trump has told supporters that his pledge to “lock up” Hillary Clinton had "played well" ahead of the US election but he now doesn't care about it.

Speaking to fans at a "Thank You" rally in Michigan, the US President-elect was talking about arrival of Ms Clinton, her husband Bill and the Obamas in the state in the last few days of the race as they tried to shore up the supposed “blue wall” of normally safe Democrat states in the Mid-west.

The crowd then began to jeer and shout “lock her up” – a chant heard frequently heard on the campaign trail.

During the campaign, Mr Trump made frequent attacks on “Crooked Hillary” over her alleged misuse of her private email as Secretary of State and unproven accusations about the finances of the Clinton Foundation.

During one rally, he even suggested gun owners – or “those Second Amendment folks” – should assassinate her if she became President.

But instead of joining his supporters in the calls to prosecute her, the former reality star told the crowd in Grand Rapids, Michigan: “That plays great before the election ... nah, we don’t care."

The Republican ruled out prosecuting Ms Clinton in the days after the election, saying it was “no longer something he felt so strongly about” and he did not want to hurt the family.

He told the New York Times: “Look, I want to move forward, I don’t want to move back. And I don’t want to hurt the Clintons. I really don’t."

This is not the first campaign promise Mr Trump has now backtracked on since his election last month – he has already admitted his infamous “big, beautiful wall” on the Mexican border is likely to be a fence.

Corey Lewandowski, Mr Trump’s first campaign manager, claimed that it was only the media who took what he said so literally during a debate at Harvard University in the weeks after the vote.

He said: “This is the problem with the media. You guys took everything that Donald Trump said so literally.

“The American people didn’t. They understood it. They understood that sometimes — when you have a conversation with people, whether it’s around the dinner table or at a bar — you’re going to say things, and sometimes you don’t have all the facts to back it up.”

Hillary lost the election, no point in dragging out their feud. It was a good way to get voters to turn up against her, even if the goal wasn't desirable after a Trump victory.

But he didn't actually say to assassinate her. Depending on your personal bias going into the clip, two people will come up with different views.

Personally, I thought it was dumb to even dance around that subject. If he meant to say, "they could go out and vote and convince others to vote against Hillary to protect the 2nd Amendment"... then why didn't he just say that? Instead of leaving it up to interpretation, that will no doubt get played only one way in the media?

I know a few people that voted for Trump, and it's odd that they don't care about him backtracking on the Hillary prosecution. When I probed them on WHY, they said they care more about the Economy and National Security and they took the whole Trump vs Hillary E-mail Server as a "joke". They then said he was just saying that to rile up his followers. To which I said is extremely dangerous and left it at that.

They won't. They will claim that what he said on the campaign trail was just to rile up voters. While true to an extent with Politicians.. not everything they say on the campaign trail is complete BS just to get votes. A good portion of it might be, but surely not all.

This wasn't a typical election, it wasn't an election really based on who will do better for the country and the world, it was more based on "my guy is better than yours, go fuck yourself" in a sort of grade school type of way. It was also based on a "who is more entertaining" while people seemingly forgot that politics (especially a presidential race) isn't supposed to be for entertainment. All Trump supporters care is that their guy won and Hillary lost, plain and simple. It's obvious Trump supporters didn't care about facts to begin with, it made me feel very ashamed for my country to see how willingly everyone was to turn such a blind eye to all this man's failings, all his juvenile speech and tactics, how at debates he lied on average once every 3 minutes...the list can go on. Hillary was garbage too, but nothing about Trump supporters shocks me at this point. They voted for a character that entertains them and not a real person, basically. If Trump cant do things like stop illegal migration that does suck. Not achieving a goal is bad. But it isnt an argument as to how Trumpers voted wrong. Having someone sympathetic to your ideas in power is still better than someone who outright has opposite policy positions.
