You want your crap food, pay your crap prices.
Anyone drinking enough soda/tea/whatever to be negatively affected by this tax in any meaningful way is drinking too damn much soda/tea/whatever.

Umm what if it was not an added heath cost and not causing others more taxes over the long run?

Diet sodas have been proven countless times now to increase peoples weight over time. If you drink a sugared drink, atleast you got the calories and your body doesnt want more again straight away/as soon. Drink diet and your body feels starved making it more likely for you to aim for carb foods which cause body fat. Also I know that can of Coke is bad for me. Most people think by drinknig Diet Coke that its a healthy option.
Aspartme whcih is used in most diet drinks is incredibly toxic to the body.
I think that tax though seems a little silly. Theres better ways to tax unhealthy food. Such as giving it a health rating via your regulatory body and have a tax bracket based on that (so 1-5 star health rating, 5 being like fresh fruit and veg and lean meats, and then going 5 stars have 0 tax, 4 has 1%, 3 has 2% etc and adjust to make it work).
Oh and $10 a pack of smokes over there? Come to Australia and buy a pack of 30s. Last time I got a pack for a family member it was $35 and that was about 3 increases ago.
What a complete load of horseshit that opinion piece was. Obesity is a major added costs in the healthcare system (and thus the tax burden).. His entire argument is in fact rather silly. The decreased life expectancy in no way makes up for the increased health care costs. Had he included healthcare costs pr day alive it might have some value.. Otherwise it´s like saying USA generates more tax revenue than Denmark (Not looking at pr capita at all) well no shit sherlock. Then going on to compare Alzheimers to self inflicted damage through unhealthy living is just WTF. His fellowship should be revoked immediately for extreme clownshoes.

Obesity is certainly not the only factor. It´s pretty damn toxic, says the FDA

might want to look up who wrote that Doc. (that was not by the FDA but by a guy call Mark Gold and submitted)

and going on cost.
and a lot of those cost listed above is lost wages and what the person themselves spend on heath issues (which is not the general tax payers problem) we're talking about what it cost other tax payers.

Except this tax has nothing to do with promoting health or paying for additional health costs. All funds from this particular tax are being used to fund "Pre-K education" so that welfare moms can get free daycare for their kids

If they did that, then the corporations would just pass on the tax on the consumer anyway. You liberals never seem to get it through your thick skulls that corporations are never going to eat the cost of any of the regulations/fees/taxes/fines that you throw at them
Another stupid solution. You want to tackle the rise of soda and sugar drinks, perhaps address why the government subsidies corn which as a result keeps the prices of these sugary drinks super low to begin with. Hell a 24pack of WATER costs you more than a 24 pack of soda.
In Canada we pay like 2$+ for a 2L bottle of coke. QQ more.
though 100% is ridiculous, maybe it'll stop people from drinking so many sugar bombs from now on. a blessing for your wallet and your health
Because people are complaining about obesity, yes? they want something done, yes? If they refuse to educate themselves, refuse to practice any self-discipline when making healthy choices because sugary shit "tastes good," but then insist that government does "something," by electing those that will do just that, why should anyone be surprised at the outcome?
At least the city will do some good with the money.
All common food in the US is bad for you, from pesticides to antibiotics to sugar. Its all bad, that's why the obesity rate and health decline in the US is so bad. McDonalds should be shut down along with all the other places that sell toxic food. Thats the answer, but they supply jobs and taxes so....
Taxes on shit that's bad for you is a good thing, it is suppose to keep people from causing harm for their body's and then expecting Medicaid/Medicare to pay for your bad habits while your in the hospital. Even if you have your own insurance, the amount you spend on healthcare doesn't cover what they pay out on you, so who absorbs that cost?
Is the Tax wrong, of course it is, the government needs to go after the people that manufacture this shit and sells it to the population with smiles on their face, but that isn't going to happen as it would send the nation into a recession. America needs their sugar/nicotine fix. So this tax is the only "acceptable" solution.
again (which is half this thread is about) they are doing it to diet drinks too like Green tea, and seems really stupid to screw over others because of another groups self control. *and good with this money, paying their own retirement fund if some of the comments in the news report are true.
So the solution is to starve people?
