I don't see why classic would be better since it's mostly included in the current game ... if you compare what was produced at the time, maybe the soundtrack was superior overall, objectively a masterpiece of atmosphere, same can be said of the zones, but said zones are in the current game so ... maybe like 3 replaced models were superior before the replacement, 4 old replaced zones (like thousand needles, it was superior before and such things are missing currently to make the game complete), that's it ... there's hundreds of models and dozens of zones now

This is going to end so well. But for the sake of it classic today isn't. It's an outdated game. However I would like to see Blizzard implement official Legacy for the people interested in it. And I myself would play it. Personally I want Wrath or MoP but well that's just me.

The one and only thing vanilla has over current is how interwoven the community was.

No name changes and no server transfers.

While I understand adding these things was needed from a business model perspective, it absolutely destroyed the community of a server and also allowed those who wanted to be douche flutes to proceed with little danger.

People (generally) were careful to safeguard their reputation of their character.

Other than that, WoW is far superior now than then.

Freshness. Vanilla took the best of the niche genre and made it way more popular in the West.

Classic was better for people new to MMOs because of the sense of exploration. Many people didn't come from one of the other big MMOs, and WoW was the first for them.

You can't replicate a "first" experience with something.

Personally, I came from EQ in Vanilla, and don't really get the nostalgia. The current game is much better imo.

Classic was an RPG, Legion is an action game.

I don't think you can say which one is better. Apples and oranges, you see.

classic wow was a game some dudes dreamed up and created, current wow is a cashcow focused on accessibility and customer retention (im not saying the game isnt good, just that its no longer top priority).

I started MMO's with Ultima Online in 1997.

A modern day version of that game would be the bees knees.

I'd believe your words more if you didn't word your title in such a baiting way, stating subjectivity as fact.

The competition didn't have the overwhelming quality that they have nowadays. Warcraft got rivals now!

    The list is huge..

-No player-controlled Flying Mounts (this made and kept the world feeling absolutely massive (great for an explorer/adventurer PoV), world pvp was nurtured because of this because you couldn't just up and fly away from battles; you had to fight. Also content lasted longer because of having to actually travel everywhere like a traditional RPG)

-Singular difficulty (made the raiding scene more prestigious and way less watered down/convoluted -- took less resources to balance one difficulty comparatively to today)

-Linear Raiding (made raiding meaningful because you had to be successful in one raid in order to move on to the next. made content last longer and made the cream rise to the top)

-Attunements (rite of passage for players coming into the raiding scene, separated good from bad, and made everything more meaningful)

-RPG aspects (too many to list, but created a game with much more depth, nuance, realism, and made everything more meaningful)

-No anonymity (No realm change, no faction change, no race change, no name change) - created a continuity of community, and meant there'd be social consequences for breaking rules because you couldn't just run to a new server with a new identity. many trolls (etc.) had to completely start over which meant massive time sink and re-investment

Non-connected Realms (Each realm was its own community. You were known for your skill, professions, gear, pvp prowess, personality, etc. and realms were able to self-police trolls and the pariahs. the level of trolling that goes on today wouldn't have flown back then)

Talent Trees and non-Pruned skill sets (much more diverse and varying playerbase, actual meaningful decisions with consequences, and larger skill sets seriously separated great players from basic ones)

I could go on and on

I think the final and major word is, it was 'NEW'.

Sorry, but that is the only word that is the correct word as the rest would derail the thread easily. It wasn't better on many points it was quite bad, compared to the same points now. But then, it was new, a world we were grasping and exploring, many for the first time and other, a second portal from the RTS series. It was a vast new world that permitted us to be part of the story, and we have been till now, grown in such a way that many are more lingering back to when we were the rookies, the stranger whom helped, the footman whom was on the field.

The new feeling will always win, but at times, it is shadowed by the nostalgia feeling.

I fell in love with World of Warcraft upon the first launch day, and I have since, but I would never be able to go back and say, 'this is just better'. The story must go on, the pages are being filled and we are experiencing more. Friends lost, friends found, and that is the life of a game that isn't stuck in time.

    Pros
-The entire world was filled with people doing stuff
    -Aggro management
    -Mana Management
-No LFR, LFD made server communities
-Epics were in fact epic and VERY hard to get
-Gurubashi Arena and Dire Maul arena full of people
-Eating, drinking and first aid were mandatory while leveling for the majority of classes #hard leveling experience
    -Class diversity
-A lot of flavour stuff for the sake of roleplay value. Nowadays everything is the same for the sake of "game balance"

    Cons
    -Game Balance

    Nostalgia.

Really, that's most of it. We remember what we love fondly and forget its faults. Vanilla WoW was a good game for the year it released. If it was released today as a $15 a month MMO, it would not be received well. It was also the first MMO for many people. That holds a lot of weight. My first MMO was FFXI. I played that since beta and loved it too. That doesn't mean I'd be playing it still today if it was released at $12 a month.

Even though I've stopped playing WoW, I can admit WoW today is better than when it first came out. I don't know if its the best its ever been, but I do know it has improved a lot since it first came out. Its still the number 1 subscription MMO out there, even if its dropped to 4 or 5 million subs. That's impressive. I give the developers a lot of credit for what they've created. I think I just outgrew it. I'll still probably come back from time to time (probably each new expansion release) and I'll follow the news. I just think WoW has come a long way and prefer the way it is today to the old grind in Silithis because your ran out of quests days.

There was more of a sense of community and that was about it. That's what people crave.

From a gameplay perspective WoW is way better nowadays. Objectively I'd say.
