Would lightning rod + liquid magma always be the best choice for farming mythic++?

I mean, I can't see going ascendance/echo outside of seriously tough tyrannical mods on 13+ or something,

I've been tinkering with LM / Ascendance as a compromise. You still get boss burst, and the improved aoe (though an inattentive tank can botch your totem placement)

I've been using the icefury build but with lightning rod instead. Only lose 20k or so on single target, and have some better AOE for all the group packs.

How is it icefury build if you aren't taking icefury?

Lower keys +0-9 I'd always go Lightning Rod + Liquid Magma. Just rotate SK and LM, so that you've a CD for every trash pack.

Alternative is a Asc build with LM, and PE for tyrannical or Echo for fortified weeks.

Judging by personal experience there's not much use for Icefury in mythic+.

I would only rum LMT on Fortified weeks (and BRH). Baseline elemental aoe is sufficient for Tyrannical.
