    are malls a dying breed?

So I live in Northwest Ohio. Toledo area. I often take a drive to goto stores and there's one thing I've been noticing in many towns is that malls seem to be slowly fading away in all but the biggest cities in ohio. Polaris mall in Columbus is doing good. But all the towns around me malls are slowly closing. Is this happening in your towns? Are they being replaced with outlet malls?

    Bring back the malls.

the health of a mall is dictated by its demographics

I think online shopping is hurting malls. There are very very few reasons I go to my local mall, and it's less than 5 minutes away and one of the greatest malls in the country in terms of size and diversity.

As I grow older, I find no need to go to a mall. I don't like to window shop, and I don't need to look at 40 outfits to find one that I like. I don't need to spend extra money to impress others. As for others, the mall was a place to socialize, and that function has been replaced in many ways. With profit margins of many retailers tanking, especially the anchor stores, malls are going to fail more and more every year. If you look at the typical anchor stores for a mall, most are suffering through difficult financial times, and they will bring everything else down with them. They simply cannot compete with more-efficient business models.

this. the only time I even go to local mall anymore is becasue that's where movie theater is, so when we go to the movies, we may browse sales shelves at FYE and gamestop, but otherwise... shopping online is FAR more convenient and usually cheaper.

Mostly yes. Although, i dont get how people can online shop for things like clothes. Thats just asking for trouble and wasted money.

Also, I like to get things immediately, so a mall or store is preferable to online unless its something I cant get physically due to age of product.

The mall near me though is fine. Lots of people go everyday. The other one nearby is dying, but they're putting an aquarium in it to help reviatlize it. I think its a good diea, since the nearest acquarium is about an hour away...

I actually go to a theatre like 20 minutes away because it has recliners and dine-in service. Like, you order food/drinks during the movie and they will do refills for you and whatnot.

Only reason I hit up the mall is for Crate & Barrel. Always need more kitchen supplies. (I have a problem)

Honestly, I don't know. The mall by me is always crowded (northern DE), so it doesn't seem so around here, but I can't really say how they're doing in the rest of the country. I've had to go to the one here twice this month. Both were in the middle of the week during the day and yet it was quite crowded. Not just college age people who might still be on break, but tons of people of all ages. I prefer shopping online for most things so I personally avoid the mall when I can.

Not so easy in womens clothing. Especially bras.

A size D at VS is not the same as a size D from Macys, or a size D from any other kind of retailer. Its stupid.

(or Ive had medium blouses at one store be the same size as small at another).

You do realize that at least 12 people are going to ask for "proof" in the next 5 minutes.

I will concede there. My sisters have always complained about that.

For men's dress shirts I saw an app that would take your measurements. They advertised it as being more accurate than a tailor. I meant to download it but I can't recall the name.

I think lost of brick and mortar places are dying, malls would be on that list. There will always be malls, but they will have to offer more than just stores. Like Gurnee Mills near me, it has a skate rink, some BS rides, like a zoo type thing for reptiles. So even if you dont need to shop there are things of interest.

    ????

Stating that all the young people (i.e. the ones who shop the most) are leaving for the big city isn't going to get you infracted.

Though that is only one of the reasons for the decline (online retailing and rising inequality are the other two).

Almost half of ours is closed off due to stores pulling out. There was only one store I'd go to in there and it shut down years ago.
