Because if it werent, the story would be about what his fascist school group did, talk about, intended. Where they championed the cause of the axis powers, or nazism, and their bigoted ways. Instead we have a misnamed teenagers school club. You have nothing more. There is, so far, not a shred of wrong doing, misdeeds, even thouht crime. There is zero connection between him and fascism outside of the sharing of a combination of 7 letters.

I hsve no dog in this fight, and no love for this man, and I certainly do not like Trump, but if the best you have is that his club had the word fascist in it, then you have precisely nothing and either neee to move long and accept the inevitable or go back to the drawing board and find some tangible proof that he is who the left is so quick to label him.

They both vociferously opposed the CRA and Goldwater only carried the deep southern states. His message appealed to authoritarian southern whites. He is one of the founders of the modern conservative movement to obfuscate the underlying reasoning for states rights; white supremacy and nullification of federal authority so states can discriminate, isolate, and exclude blacks at will for no reason.

You can be in denial about the beginnings of your modern conservative ideology, but it is laid bare in history. The rising tide of black enfranchisement and federal power to protect more and more US citizens from deliberate state government inaction scared authoritarians in the deep south and the west. Serendipitously, just like in the prelude to the civil war, like a cornered rat, they attacked and became even more extreme in defense of their illiberal social system.
