It's not an all or nothing situation. You can do both.

We're not going to solve unemployment and homelessness overnight, and certainly not by ignoring everyone else.

I would imagine these countries providing a power barrier (so to say) of being their ally brings them into the fold.

So... bring in tens of thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of extra bodies isn't going to compound this particular example?

I'm not oppose to the idea of sending money vs bringing in bodies. However I know there are a ton of Japanese culture fans here and I wonder how they will balance their love of Japan vs. Japan refusing refugees.
Actually, this just makes me love and respect Japan more. NOTICE ME BAKA NIPPON SENPAI!!!!

The Japanese are xenophobes, the US is the opposite of that and I think it's benefitted the US greatly. Steve Job's dad is Syrian, Trump's mom was a Scot, etc.

Not even a person from my family, fortunately. The few that did move during the dictatorship are all back safe and sound.
Interesting thing is, the Portuguese people that went there, didn't got any special perks at arrival. They worked hard for survival, they adapted and, more often than not, merged with the local society.

That's usually what happens when we are connecting people from similar mentalities and core values.

As someone from Sweden I think we should follow their example as well, at least until infrastructure catches up.
While we have massive amounts of available land in this country we don't have enough housing or infrastructure, I mean the average wait for a contract to a rental apartment in the nations capital Stockholm and it's suburbs is 13 YEARS, in Lund and Uppsala the wait is 7 years on average.
If you're looking to buy there's obviously no waiting list but you should be able to put down $40-50k up front and of course be elegible for a loan of at least $300k (based on prices in Stockholm)

Resources are not infinite. If you give the minimum required to survival to someone new, that's resources that could be being given to that own country's citizens in need.

I believe this statement is true if you believe printing off more money is the answer to everything. I dunno, your statement just seems a little over simplistic for me at least.

I'm not disagreeing. We are a nation of refugees and immigrants, but immigrants were denied acces if they were not deemed american enough.

That last problem, aging population, can be partially alleviated by allowing more people to immigrate to their country.

    Oh look, an immigration thread.

I guess I should have read one page further, you seem to be on of the people that think this.
Japan is perfectly capable of taking care of their own and more. And with low birthrates they should be bringing people, not excluding them out of a xenophobic sentiment.
