Need some serious help with Elemental DPS.

I've been kind of putting off asking these forums purely because of pride, but I guess it's really starting to piss me off a bit. I'm a well-seasoned raider (12+ years) and have always played at the high-end of the game, so I do consider myself a good player. not excellent but good.. However my DPS is shockingly bad relative to my ilevel (891, but 889 equipped) and I just cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm doing so fundamentally wrong.

So lets take my guilds logs for Star Augur for example:

Now lets compare that to one of the top ranking Ele's for that fight on Heroic:

That guy has finished on 615k DPS, with the exact same ilevel. There is nothing that I can see between our abilities that screams incompetence or bad play (bear in mind my guild killed the boss over a minute quicker than this Ele's so he has more casts on spells), so what is going on?

A part of me feels like I'm massively underestimating how valuable mastery is to this build. A couple of weeks ago I had 74% mastery and after getting some better itemised gear (less haste/vers) I dropped to ~65% which is when I wasn't getting over 500k on Star Augur anymore. I'm on 68% atm and we are ideally supposed to have 86%.. However the above Elemental has 77% mastery and is still smashing it.

My goodness my Guinness can anyone help this poor chap?

You have rank 33 on your weapon. The guy who you compare yourself with has rank 54 (+15% damage).
that's already 70k dps.

He has good trinkets while yours are quite bad

You'd probably do 100k extra with his trinkets and rank 54.

Fastest way to improve, get rank 35 by farming m+ (anything above 10+ gives 300k on completion) to get a flat 5% increase.
Do karazhan nightbane with friends and try to get a mastery stat stick (ethereal urn) to replace that craptastic unstable horrorslime.

Go figure.
His numbers are higher, his gear is better, his EB usage is better, his Stormkeeper usage is better, you Fire Elemental'ed only once, you wasted more Maelstrom in a shorter fight and on top of that you seemed to have bad crit luck. And all of that is completely meaningless because I only just noticed that your artifact is total garbage. You can't expect to deal damage if your artifact is 20% dmg behind the guy you're comparing yourself to.
