Trump's attack on media as 'enemy of the people' is disgraceful and dangerous

    http://www.itv.com/news/2017-02-18/t...and-dangerous/

Friday night's "enemy of the people" tweet by Donald Trump has created further widespread concern about the direction of this Presidency.

It hints darkly of a Nixon-like mood inside the White House.

As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump tweeted many provocative thoughts and insulted many groups.

Some of his core supporters have always insisted to those he targets, including journalists, that we need to have a sense of humour and stop taking him so literally.

But he is now President of the United States. Many journalists and camera operators have risked their lives believing that news coverage is worthwhile and that journalism is a vital public service.

So branding the major US networks and the New York Times "the enemy of the American people" is a disgrace.

    It is also dangerous.

Journalists are already being targeted, and are more likely to be after this latest tweet. And this is the nation that enshrines our freedom to report in its First - yes, First - Amendment.

As some Washington reporters are noting, myself included, if the President wants to make amends he can walk the half mile from the White House to the museum dedicated to the press and its values.

Newseum', as it's known, is a two-storey wall with the names of reporters and camera teams who have been killed in the line of duty.

There are 2,291 names on the wall, and the list grows longer every year.

It is not a shrine to the enemy of the American people, but to those who have died trying to inform their fellow citizens.
    What's your opinion on this

Calling it a 'Nixon-like' mood is being fairly generous. It's closer to some of the statements that fell out of Edrogans mouth a few months back.

It's true? The scary part, is how often those who demonize free press, compare it ministry of truth. It becomes that authority is demonizing free press, by claiming its derived from authority. They are actually demonizing the authority free press has to hold government accountable, by claiming the government is the only truth. It's a very bizarre rationale, that contradicts it self in its own definition.

Well he's got a point to an extent, the media during the election really only reported what they wanted people to hear and generally most media moguls all donated to the Democrats and ignored anything that could tarnish said party. Anything that doesn't help them in some way or creates a shit storm they won't really bother reporting like Obamas start on the "Muslim" ban etc.

Same thing happened in England, Cameron tried to get the Head of the Daily mail fired because they were printing brexit related stories when the Majority of the conservative party wanted to remain in the EU and the Daily mail is a very conservative paper.

Not really. The media has been lying a lot so people don't trust it. It used to be called cause and effect back in my day.

1: that's not how cause and effect works.
2: you're not old enough to make "back in my day" comments.

I'm of two minds of it:

    1. He's correct, especially as the media doesn't serve the interest of the populace but of corporate advertisers and stockholders. As time has gone on it's basically created a space for alternative media whose very existence doesn't depend on toeing the line editorially or otherwise to step up and provide info and perspective that you can't get anywhere in the 'regular Legacy' media. Watching Legacy media is one long advertisement for Globalism, Inc. which incidentally this article pays tribute to with those fallen reporters bit and all the hoopla about the vital public service of journalism. We live in a world born of Operation Mockingbird for fucks' sake.

    2. Naming enemies is something that should be done with extreme reservation and with a great deal of tact in doing so and trust in the audience to understand why. I see very little tact which is of course his thing and I see a good deal of trust in the audience. I don't have a problem with this even from the stance of partisan today, other partisan tomorrow creeping over the horizon.

"Fascist forever club and fact checked by buzzfeed" are not examples of them lying, but showing how you define media.

I am sadly a honest man. Less you believe pewdeepie is a secert nazi now?

The media has been acting like a jackass while expecting to magicly maintain its credibility. You can't have both and well...

Media has been caught lying and pushing BS stories for many, many years now. This didn't start with Trump. These lies and misleadings aren't trivial bullshit like "biggest win since Reagan".

Now we have Trump doing exactly the same. Its not a coincidence. Thank God for the system of checks and balances, even then it might not be enough.
