$15 an Hour Pay Advocates Meet Market Reality

Burger-flipping robot replaces humans on first day at work

    9 MARCH 2017 • 10:42AM

    Mark Molloy

A burger-flipping robot has just completed its first day on the job at a restaurant in California, replacing humans at the grill.

Flippy has mastered the art of cooking the perfect burger and has just started work at CaliBurger, a fast-food chain.

The robotic kitchen assistant, which its makers say can be installed in just five minutes, is the brainchild of Miso Robotics.

“Much like self-driving vehicles, our system continuously learns from its experiences to improve over time,” said David Zito, chief executive officer of Miso Robotics.

“Though we are starting with the relatively 'simple' task of cooking burgers, our proprietary AI software allows our kitchen assistants to be adaptable and therefore can be trained to help with almost any dull, dirty or dangerous task in a commercial kitchen — whether it's frying chicken, cutting vegetables or final plating.”

Cameras and sensors help Flippy to determine when the burger is fully cooked, before the robot places them on a bun. A human worker then takes over and adds condiments.

More Flippy robots will be introduced at CaliBurgers next year, with the aim of installing them in 50 of their restaurants worldwide by the end of 2019.

CaliBurger say the benefits include making “food faster, safer and with fewer errors”.

So let's see, no one has to guess what it wrote on an application. It doesn't get high on breaks. It doesn't spit in food. Won't take time off to protest its own job. It never complains it's raising a family of peripherals on minimum wage. Oh and last but not least it will get along really well with the kiosk that took its order and won't be loud and abrasive.

    What's not to love.

You do know that these things take years to build plan and release right? your assertion is downright idiotic automation is going to happen regardless of wages because robots don't need healthcare, sleep or anything. From kiosks to automated cooking menial jobs are going away little by little which is why people losing their minds over immigrants is mind boggling. The real job killers cannot be stopped from accountants to truck drivers technology is going to put a lot of people out of work and governments around the world have no clue how to handle it yet.

So, automation is going to take these jobs just like it took all the manufacturing jobs? Hopefully these workers don't start scapegoating everything with a pulse like the autoworkers did.

If you think the removal of minimum wage laws will prevent automation, I've got some bad news for you.

    .
All this development is gonna happen anyway regardless if minimum wage exists or not.

Companies move from country to country to save 10 cents. They will do EVERYTHING they can to save money. Sooner or later this all will crash hard anyway. 10s of millions of jobs will be lost in the next 1-2 decade.

    Why is that
There's a large portion of the US population that still believes Reaganomics is a functioning economic model. I blame the education system.

The reality check here is that if no one is working then no one can afford a burger.

Sounds great to me! Bring on the automation.

The more jobs we eliminate, the closer we move towards a Universal Income. And if that gets put in place, the people's mental health can improve, and our relations with one another can improve.

It needs a huge investment. Ever wondered why we are so competitive in agriculture, yet lag behind in technology so much?

Erm.......pretty much all big companies and countries are pumping billions upon billions into the development and deployment of automation. The investments are already being made quite heavily.

There is no limited amount of jobs not sure what you on a about.
That doesn't make a lick of sense. Of course jobs are limited, just by an imagenery hard cap.

It's going to happen regardless. Hell China pays slave wages and even they're replacing their workers with machines.

It's a matter of what we can do to get ahead of the damage instead of having a poverty epidemic and trying to fix it after the fact.

No, they blame immigrants for job losses due to automation.

    Why? He is 100% right.

Either his version comes true or the world will burn. There are only those two options.

Nah we should keep blaming foreigners for everything instead of embracing the reality and working on a solution. /S
