While using an electric kettle to heat water is commonplace in Australia, it was learned that many Americans actually use the microwave to get their water to boiling point.
A wave of disbelief washed over Twitter when this was discovered.

My kettle is mostly used for tea and coffee, and not much else. If they don't drink either of those, or have a coffee machine, then I can see people not having a kettle.

I also don't have an electric kettle at home. Why would I? How often and what for would I need to boil water for direct consumption? The two times in the year I am sick and want to make some tea?
Or do you boil water for cooking (for examples for noodles) in the electric kettle first and then pour it into a pot on the stove?

i actually get my hot water from my senseo without coffee pads
then i don't really have a lot of use for boiling water.

I have an electric kettle but I rarely use it to be honest. most of the time i just use a regular kettle on a stove top, out of habit. yes, I'm old. I do occasionally heat water in a microwave, but only when i just want a single cup of tea and don't feel like bothering with a whole pot for just one cup. I suppose i could use electric kettle for it, but a cup is just so convenient. its already measured, I know how long I need to keep it in a microwave to get the right temp, and then I just drop in a teabag or an infuser once its out. and no, it doesn't make the water taste worse >_> filtered water is filtered water.

P.S. I pretty much live on tea, so most of the time i make myself a pot. but sometimes I want a different kind, just one cup of it. so.. yeah

You can do that if you really must have whatever you are boiling as soon as possible, since it's faster to reach boiling than just heating the water in a pan. If you're super tight for time, also heat a small amount of water in the pan whilst boiling the kettle, so you're not putting boiling water into a cold pan then heating the pan up before you can continue to keep the water hot.

But yes I use one to get water for tea or instant noodles, or speed up heating up water for making pasta/rice or something.

Crappy electric stove here, high powered gas stove would be much faster.

Ever since I lived on my own I got a Quooker so I never needed one anymore.

I'm not a tea drinker but I do use a electric percolator coffee maker it's from the 1950's works great.

But if I would want hot water for tea I'm sure I could use it for just water.
