ROY, UT (KUTV/CNN) - Dramatic and startling police body cam video shows a deadly officer-involved shooting.
An officer shot a suspect with his own gun during a scuffle at a gas station in Feburary.
The video began as officers approached Nicolas Sanchez at the door of the gas station.
After a brief verbal exchange, Sanchez lifted up his jacket. "You got a gun on you. Do not reach," one officer said.
What happens next is quick.
The first officer struggled with Sanchez. They fell to the ground. Then the officer came back up and shot Sanchez.
The gun he fired is the gun police say Sanchez had. The officer dropped Sanchez's gun and pulled out his own.
Heather White, the attorney representing the police, said the officer who shot Sanchez with his own gun thought Sanchez may have had a second firearm and decided to use the suspect's own weapon against him after his partner had already fired shots at Sanchez.
“Fearing Sanchez may have another weapon, and hearing shots fired, the first officer shot Sanchez with the gun he had wrestled from Sanchez. When the first officer saw Sanchez was not moving, he dropped Sanchez’ gun and drew his gun from his holster,” White said.
"Because he hears the shots being fired, he doesn't know if Sanchez has another weapon on him," she said.
The officer who first opened fire claims he saw Sanchez point the gun at his face before he shot, yet White admits the video may not show that.
"It is not clear which why we feel it is important to have this statement and opportunity to talk to you," she said.
The two officers are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation from the Weber County attorney's office.
