    Indoor plants for a beginner

I'm looking for a living thing to take care of, and beside how well I [think I] do helping raise my niece and taking care of myself, it still doesn't seem to be enough to keep me satisfied.

So I am wanting to have just a single plant I can keep in my room and watch grow and tend to and love and probably talk to a lot more than would seem healthy.

If anyone could suggest a nice looking something that requires little sunlight, or I suppose I'd be willing to build a shelf under my window if need be, and provide a few tips on how to best raise it, it would help a noob a lot- thanks!

Jalapeno / Chili / Habanero plants are easy if you have a southern window.

A ficus grafted bonsai could be a good choice. They're good for beginners as it's hard to over/under water them. They also look cool. I received mine off Amazon and it's plenty healthy,

A cactus seems lame, too easy almost. I want a little bit of a challenge.

Something that blooms with a flower would be particularly nice, although I figure those types would be pretty limited for indoors. I might just go with a nice sunflower right outside, but it would hurt having my child so far away from me

You could also hang a planter box outside your window and grow herbs. Those would be useful.

Get a pet fish. A small fish tank sounds like it'd be good for you.

Nothing to tree like either, I'd like to keep it small

Nvm you sound a bit lonely. Maybe we should upgrade to a mammal like a hamster.

Gross, fish stink and they die too often. Plus I've got way more than enough pets to take care of.

Never lonely when you enjoy your own company, and I'm an awesome motherfvcker to kick it with

Bonsai tree, you can care for it and interact with it.

Peace Lily. Very easy to grow, good for removing toxins from the air, has pretty white flowers. Also, if wilted, watering regularly it is very hardy and will make a full recovery in a matter of 2-3 days.

I would suggest still going to the local gardening store and getting a nice pot and good potting soil for it.

This is solid .... just due to it being simple to grow and you get something out of it beside being pretty could also be cress ( i think the english name for it is ) grows fast and taste good on your food, you do not even need soil for cress ...grow it in cotton and add a little water .. a week and you can harvest the first.

If you like to cook most herbs are relatively easy to grow if you have the sun. I built myself a wall mounted herb garden, looks nice, but because I don't get enough sun all my herbs died.

I saw you said you have animals. If have a cat, peace lilies can be a problem if your cat eats some. If you don't think it'd be a problem peace lily still gets my vote. If you do think its a problem, a Chrysanthemum gets my second vote, though, it's not as hardy and requires more sunlight (remember to open the windows too, as windows filter out many spectrums of UV light which help plants grow).

Golden Pothos : impossible to kill, purifies your air, and is easy to talk to. I spent hundreds of thousands of hours talking to mine. And, they are much better behaved than children.

*Bonus: one of the easiest plants to start a new plant from using a cutting.
