yeah I'm confused how gender has anything to do with this. Macron seems like the epitome of a centrist with a hint of social liberalism and competing against basically an alt right nationalist ideologue.

It doesn't change the fact that 1 in 3 people who bothered to show up and 1 in 5 people counting absent voters identifies political with Le Pen's views. She lost but that doesn't change the fact that there is a clear place for her politics.

Second turn always has less turnout, some people don't want to vote for their lesser of two evils.

That's actually the exact opposite, second turn always has higher turnout, it's the first time in french history that it isn't the case.
In fact, the low participation and high amount of blank votes are a big subject.

It's pretty much a good thing. Le Pen was a heavy pusher of French nationalism akin to Donald Trump in the US. Macron is almost the definition of a centrist while being socially liberal. He's not going to make some enormous waves but it's a victory unless you support the French's version of the alt right.
