The EC didn't fail, it was the primaries that failed. The EC did what it was supposed to do and kept a worse person from becoming president. If either party nominated a person not named Trump or Clinton, then neither would be elected. But with both parties nominating the worse people they could find it was a battle of seeing who had less people who hated them.

The problem with that theory is that Clinton is a standard politician with experience in the White House, and thus infinitely more suitable for the job than Trump, despite her issues, while Trump is literally the kind of person who the EC was designed to prevent from sitting in the Oval Office.

This isn't about parties or politics, it's about a person's suitability. You may hate her policies or think she's done shady things in the past, but she is not what the EC was built to safeguard against, and Trump is. There's just no arguing with it. He's the textbook definition of a demagogue. That's why people started talking about the EC so much this election. It's the first time in a while that that particular factor applied.
