It isn't, not even close. Its not even in same dimension.

Previous expansions: get gear. That's it.

This expansion: getting gear isn't enough because of WF/TF, get lucky with legendaries, time gated AP grind. To even get there you need flying, which is gated behind reputations that are time gated behind world quests because without flying everything takes many times longer.

Worst parts are AP grind because of stupid time gated research and legendaries because of stupid excessive RNG and requirement to farm in no-life mode.

Im worried about this legendary weapon malarkey, is there a quick way to catch up in the field with current levels and or items? or will I always be playing catch up and never be able to get in groups because of the low level weapons?

    Thanks all
People already wrote about the artifact weapon. I want to add to that: get to the Broken Shore asap. This is the catchup hub where you can get 850 and 880 gear tokens. Killing rares and looting chests give you nethershards. These nethershards are the currency for these tokens. At the same time you can do the world quests there which give you Legionfall Supplies, the other currency. 100 of those will return you artifact power and an armor token.

One thing I'm wondering about is, since the first legendary will drop so fast, if is possible to minimize KP (Killpoints) while maximizing nethershard income. If one can do that I suppose you have a high change to fish a specific legendary (The relenquished tokens have a small change to contain a legendary)

Hell why not wait until the next expansion or the one after that. Right now is about as quick as you could ever gear up even with AK and AP in place you can zip through that fast as hell right now, even as a brand new player.

But it'll be faster later on. It's a horrible expansion, you don't want to be around longer than you have to.

Well Nighthold is almost done and dusted and will most likely be nerfed into the ground when TOS hits.

You will need to farm alot of resources so you can buy all the AK skillsups you can.

You may wanna hit up every LFR raid in the hope of snagging some cool legendaries and after that farm Nethershards 5k for 880+ gear.

Suramar questline gives out so much AP its unreal so that will help you get to 35+

With all the one time source AP quests when done at higher levels of AK then they were intended you zip up on weapon levels. Sure flying makes things easier but you sure as hell don't need it for anything and it will come soon enough if you play the game. There are so many sources of quick and easy gear right now it is insane. Broken isle, WQ, world bosses the new ones being extremely great for catching up, invasions and that is jsut some of the solo stuff. Once you get over 830, which is very easy to do, then the game just starts throwing 870 stuff at you. All of that is without taking advantage of weekly quests, time walking, dungeons, mythics and mythic +, pvp or raiding.

You are in luck you don't have to play, so you don't have to hang around at all. Now other people for various reasons like it and the OP might also. If they did like it, then it would be a damn shame to had skipped until the end just to make it quicker. If they don't like it who cares if it is quick or not?

I would say it is a fairly good time to start and be ready for the next content patch. The "long term" grinds keep getting nerfed to keep new and returning players not far behind.

The idea that it would be "too late" is strange.
Too late for what? Not specifying what you want to do makes it completely impossible to give advice.

If you're planning to compete in the Mythic progression in ToS, yes, it's probably too late.
Otherwise, no. The game has millions of players in various stages of progression.

I would say it is likely to late to raid any mythic progression just due to how absurd the time gating is on artifact knowledge. Granted that only effects a small portion of players it still effects some.
