A lot of people are missing the bigger context here. This isn't just about cars.
Starting a pissing contest with the biggest economy in the EU just isn't good politics. America, with its inward looking raging stupidity is setting itself back massively on the world stage. Countries like China are emerging strongly and thats where the worlds economic growth is going to be and where peoples thoughts be when it comes to expanding if Murica keeps burning bridges.
Trump is doing a good job of eroding relationships that have been built over decades.

You missed the point. The point is that rhetoric like this erodes relationships and when that happens things don't get done. When those top politicians meet they should be thinking "how do we work together to a common goal", not "oh I have to deal with this mad blustering arsehole again".
Posting a picture of a bmw and singing its praises irrelevant.
No, you are missing the point. Germany, the nation, will ignore these antics. Nothing will come of it. Trump knows this. The EU knows this. He cannot be this stupid. The US has a lot of leverage in the world because they know how to make friends and weld them into a unified front against whatever the current enemy is. Alienating Europe like that is losing the biggest ally the US has. That's stupid on a scale the US has never done before. It's as stupid as the move for independence was smart. It would undo literally 70 years of diplomatic works, nay more like a century. It would put the US right back to before WW1.

Its odd to single out German auto makers. Domestic auto makers, who have parts manufacture plants all over Mexico, are going to feel just as much (if not more) of a bite as the 'foreign' auto makers who operate massive production plants in the US but may import some parts.

It's odd to single out the auto market to begin with. I'd think the US auto market is still different enough from European auto markets that this type of hysteria is unwarranted. German car manufacturers in particular are not known for their "muscle" or large interior space, two of the main things that a typical American auto customer expects. Plenty of space and storage room and lots and lots of raw mechanical torque to compensate for the extra weight. European cars tend to be much smaller in comparison and sacrifice space for efficiency. I am sure European brands adapt their design for the US market, but as far as I can see, the basic underlying design for a BMW doesn't change all that much when the design moves to a US plant.
So no, this doesn't make any sense at all. The worst thing that keeps coming back into my mind is "Why are German cars sold so much that the US president feels the need to point it out at every occasion? It's not because we cheated, it must be a consumer decision." and that's what brings me to the main point: Perhaps instead of implementing punitive taxes, US companies need to jump over their shadow and cater to the market in the US. Instead of pretending to shape the market themselves.
I saw an ad in connection with the Indy 500... here it is:
First: What's so special about a special edition if there are 4 more special editions?
Second: Who the fuck needs a car like that? Farmers, yes. Big city hipsters? Not so much.

Aren't some BMW's and Mercedes built in the US?
