Al dente >>>> pasta that's soft and gives no resistance. If I wanted that shit, I'd eat air.

    al dente isn't "hard"

Two main reasons to do it: First, so there's some substance to the pasta. Second, the pasta can still absorb moisture and has starch to spare, which means your sauce will flavor it and stick to it better.

"Al dente" pasta should not be hard or crack when chewed upon - it should be somewhat chewy and yield to gentle pressure, able to be rent by teeth but not the softer tissue of the tongue. Mostly it's used as an interim stage for pasta that is going to be used twice, like the pasta added to baked Mac & Cheese or in baked Ziti for example. Some dishes that utilize cold pasta alongside savory sauces or glazes also call for al dente style pasta.

If your pasta is crunchy, it wasn't al dente.

Be a decent chef and check your pasta before you pull it?

All it takes is a quick arm, some cool air and a set of teeth to determine whether or not its done or al dente.

Depends on the quality of the pasta. Fresh made (which I know isn't what you had) takes about 1-2 minutes. I'm with you though, I'll pass on the hard pasta. Cook it until it's done.

I know how to cook pasta..but if you actually followed the instructions on the back of these packages of spaghetti ...you are going to have a bad time.

    *edited to add*

ignore the part in the instructions to cook until desired tenderness

Good news as an adult you can eat your food however you like. Also as many have said al dente isnt cruncy or hard, it sounds like a lot of people don't know how to boil water.
