Do extensive research, I ended up bricking my old iMac a couple of years ago, can't remember what went wrong, I think at some point I just messed up the EFI, so try and avoid anything that has to do with boot processes.
AppleCare was useless, as I basically bricked it by screwing up the booting routines they just offered to replace the motherboard as a solution... fun times.
